SAFE DRIVING COURSE
With the COVID-19 situation, I have decided to postpone trying to set up a 55 Alive Safe Driving Course at the Howard fire hall for now. For those who did call to express interest I will be giving your name and telephone number to John Eck, the class instructor. John can make contact with you about other courses that he may have in the area that you may be able to register for once the restrictions are lifted for groups gathering.
I may try to put together another class in the fall for those who may be interested again and I’ll let you know then.
Romola Cemetery in Marsh Creek will be having cemetery clean-up so anything that you want to save must be removed from the graves before March 29. Romola Cemetery Association will have their annual meeting on March 30 at the Romola Bible Church. I wasn’t given a time for the meeting but you may contact Ron Heverly at 814-625-2116 for that meeting time or for info about lots that are available at the cemetery.
Schenck’s Cemetery clean-up will begin on April 4, 2020. All decorations will need to be removed from the gravesites for the clean-up. Anything left on the lots will be removed by the cemetery caretakers for trash and hauled away. Spring and Easter decorations can be placed on the graves beginning on April 11.
Country Music Jam at the Howard Fire Hall will be cancelled for March and April.
Liberty Township Sportsmen’s Association has cancelled Clubhouse Bingo until further notice.
Howard Area Lions Club has cancelled Lions Bingo until further notice.
Nittany Valley Amish have cancelled the benefit meal on March 21. The organizers are trying to contact those who have already reserved their time slot for the meal. If you’ve paid already then the organizers can either refund your money or you can use it towards reservations for the next meal that will be held on June 6. If you pre-paid and haven’t already been contacted yet you should call Katie at 814-383-2008.
The Virginia Rose Foundation has cancelled the Silent Auction planned for March 28. The Virginia Rose Foundation appreciates the donations that were received for this year’s auction. The auction may be rescheduled later on, but for now the foundation members and families associated with the foundation are concerned for the well-being of everyone around us. If anyone is in need of food or if there is anyone who is quarantined and needs help with picking up groceries, medicines or other necessities please contact Deanna at 814-625-2195.
Mill Hall Kiwanis has cancelled their Spring Raffle and activities thru April.
Howard Cafe is open for calling in orders for take-out at 814-264-8156 but there is no sit down dining at the restaurant.
With so many places shutting down and working with very minimal staffing I would suggest you call ahead to check on whether your planned events are still happening or whether you will be granted access to the building. Many offices (such as Insurance Office, Inc.) have employees here, but we are hoping that people will call and let us help them over the phone or by email rather than you physically coming into the office so that we all take precautions to keep the virus situation under control as best we can.
SOUP SALE CHANGES
Jacksonville Emmanuel United Church of Christ will have a Homemade Soup and Sandwich Sale from the church on March 28 from 11 a.m. until sold out. Only take-out sales will be honored as there will be no dining in at the church. Soup flavors are chicken corn, vegetable beef and ham and bean that will be sold for $6 a quart. Ham sandwiches with or without cheese will also be sold. To pre-order quarts of take-out soup you may call Ruth at 814-571-4979 before March 23. Limited access to the church for those coming to pick-up their pre-ordered soups and sandwiches will be monitored.
LIONS CLUB AID
Howard Area Lions Club will be giving food bank aid out on April 6 to those residents of Centre County. The Lions are doubling up on the amount of food to be allotted so that residents will not have to return to the food bank for one month. The Lions already initiated this doubling up process at the March 16 food bank distribution. Please call Lion Ron Davy for food bank questions at 570-962-2407.
The Howard Area Lions will also be assisting individuals who may be out of work because of the Corona virus. If you are laid off or quarantined and need food bank assistance please contact Ron Davy right away and arrangements will be made to help you. People living in the local Lions service area include those of Beech Creek, Blanchard, Howard, Hublersburg, Jacksonville, Marsh Creek, Monument and Orviston areas.
Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek will hold a Spring Bazaar on April 3 from 6-9 p.m. and on April 4 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Vendors are needed and tables are available by calling Sandi at 570-962-2397. I haven’t heard if this event is being cancelled yet or not, so if you have any questions please call Sandi directly.
Valley Ace Hardware in Milesburg will be having a Trout Derby on the first day of fishing season, April 18, 2020.
