LOCK HAVEN -- Lock Haven Eagles soared, both current and former, Friday afternoon with the annual Rebecca Gross Awards Ceremony at Lock Haven University. Over Zoom, Dr. Matthew Girton hosted the special event that brought communication students and faculty together to honor a select few gracious awardees.

The ceremony started off with the awarding of the Hybels Award which is given out to one selected freshman, sophomore and junior that are deemed as outstanding based upon GPA and outside activities, said Girton. The winners of the award from freshman to junior were: Lizabeth Kasmer of Glenside, Caprice Bischof of Lock Haven and Cassandra Keller of Pottstown.

The Margaret Ann Brown Award which is given out to the junior with the highest GPA was then awarded. Receiving the award would be Kerri Hoover of Bellefonte.

The biggest awards of the evening, both the student and alumni additions of The Rebecca Gross Award were promptly given out. The student award was given out to senior Nicholas Hornig, of Mifflinburg, for having both a high GPA as well as for his service to publication and his commitment to outside efforts in communication. Hornig expressed his appreciation and thanks to the communication department faculty that taught him the necessary means that would help him receive the achievement. He also voiced his thanks to the cocauphany of people that inspire him to do better everyday.

The ceremony would soon start to close out with the honorary Alumni award which was given out to Col. Curtis Kellogg of Tampa, Fla. He graduated from LHU in December of 1998 with a B.A. in journalism and mass communication. He was then commissioned as a second lieutenant of Field Artillery where he served in various leadership positions prior to becoming a public affairs officer. He also holds an M.A. in communication from the University of Oklahoma, an M.A. in management and leadership from Webster University.

Kellogg voiced his thanks to his former mentors that helped him through his years at LHU, one of which being a former communications department chariman, Dr. Douglas Campbell, who had sat in on the meeting to support his former student. Crediting fellow current student award winners, Kellogg gave his respect and conduct to their achievements just as he received his own.
