No room: Clinton County SPCA filled to the brim with dogs waiting for adoption

LAURA JAMESON/THE EXPRESS The Clinton County SPCA is full of cats, and especially dogs, in dire need of good homes.

DUNNSTOWN — Looking to add to your family? The Clinton County SPCA is filled with dogs of all shapes and sizes that may be the perfect fit for you.

The no-kill shelter is currently overflowing with dogs — 22 to be exact. And they’re looking for eligible families to take them home.

The shelter’s outreach coordinator, Marissa Henry, said the SPCA has room for 19 shelter dogs. The extra pooches that aren’t able to housed in this area are being kept in the shelter’s boarding space.

The uptick in shelter dogs began the week before and after Christmas, Henry said, noting that they even received a surrender on Christmas Day.

Although it’s unfortunately common for dogs to be surrendered after Christmas, before Christmas isn’t the norm.

“It’s surprising they happened before Christmas,” Henry said.

Due to COVID-19, Henry said the SPCA has adjusted how it handles adoptions.

“Something we’ve been doing is everything by appointment only if they want to meet one of the animals,” she said.

Henry said the appointment-only format has been working well for them so far. Those interested in holding a meet-and-greet with one of the dogs, or cats, up for adoption may do so in a few ways.

Those who see a dog or cat on their website — www.clintoncountyspca.org — can fill out an application on the website.

If you aren’t tech savvy, you can also have an application mailed to you, Henry said.

Once the application is approved, staff can get the ball rolling to set up a meet and greet and see if they’ll be the right fit for these furry friends.

The adoption fee for a dog is $150, which includes the cost of a license that’s good for one year.

A cat adoption fee is $51.80. Henry said the cat room is only about half full, but that includes a litter of newborn kittens they are attempting to find a foster home for.

Those who may have questions about the adoption process can call (570) 748-4756, visit their website or Facebook page — Clinton County SPCA.
