VFW BENEFIT
The Howard VFW Club will be having a Chicken BBQ on May 7 from 11 a.m. until all sold out. The club members will be cooking 300 halves of chicken at the VFW that morning and it should be ready to eat around 11 a.m.
The meal will include a half chicken, baked beans, macaroni or potato salad and a roll for $10. The proceeds will be donated to the Veterans Home in Hollidaysburg. Please call 814-625-2749 for more info.
SOUP SALE
Liberty Township Sportsmen's Association will be having a take-out soup sale on Saturday, May 14, at the club house along Marsh Creek Road. Chicken corn or ham and bean soups will be available by the quart for $7. The sale will run from 11 a.m. until it's gone, so come early to get yours.
FISHING DERBY
There will be a Kid's Fishing Derby at the pond at Liberty Township's Sportsmen's Club on April 30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The derby is for children ages 12 and younger. Registration is required for prizes to be awarded and lunch for the children and those helping them to fish. CEMETERY EVENTS
Fairview Cemetery in Boggs Township will be having their annual spring clean-up of the cemetery grounds on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 9 a.m. The rain date for the clean-up will be the following Saturday morning. Any decorations on the graves that you want to keep need to be removed before the clean-up.
The Fairview Cemetery will hold its annual Memorial Service on Sunday, May 22, at 2 p.m. This year the guest speaker will be Dave Etters.
COMING SOON
Twinkle Toes Dance Group will be holding a Cash and Gift Card Bingo on May 7 at 70 Woodward Ave. in Lock Haven. Doors open at 11 a.m. and Bingo starts at 1 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. There will also be a basket raffle, 50/50 drawing and rip tickets during the afternoon. The Orviston Community Celebration will be held on July 8-9 this year. To buy the fireworks for the festival's end, the committee holds a chicken and waffles dinner. This year the dinner will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the Beech Creek-Blanchard Fire Company social hall. The dinner will run from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and the cost for everyone age 9 and over is $10. Those younger than 9 can eat for free. There will be both eat in meals and take-outs available. Call Brenda at 570-660-5283 to reserve your meals or for more info.
LADIES SHOOT
Liberty Township Sportsmen's Association will be holding a Ladies Shoot on May 7 from 8 a.m. to noon at the skeet field on the club's property in Marsh Creek. Registration needs to be done before May 1 by calling or texting Renee Hillard at 607-425-1377. Ladies of all ages are invited to enter skeet, trap or 5-stand contest. You should bring your own shotgun and shells.
LIONS NEWS
Howard Area Lions distributed 97 boxes of food aid to families during the month of April. The Lions Food Bank will be distributing food boxes on May 2 to those living in Centre County and on May 16 for those living in the Beech Creek area of Clinton County. The food bank hours are from noon to 3 p.m. and is by drive-thru service.
A donation was made to the Friendship Community Center for their use with improving the facilities there.
The club recently welcomed two new members, Barry Yarnell and William Cummings, which brings our local club's membership to 103 Lions members.
Lions Bingo will be held on May 12 and May 26 at the Beech Creek-Blanchard Fire Company social hall. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m.
The Lions Club will be holding a Memorial Service at the Foster Joseph Sayers Memorial Site on May 27. More details will be provided.
CURTIN
VILLAGE
Curtin Village will offer a lecture and presentation entitled "Victorian Vibe" on Sunday, May 1, from 2-4 p.m. Knowledgeable speakers will tell all about Victorian fashion. If you are a volunteer (or a volunteer in waiting) at a historic site (such as Curtin Village) and want to be suitably attired, or if you just want to see and learn about the clothing style, then this afternoon is for you. It's free, although donations are gratefully accepted.
Guided tours of the Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Mansion will start soon. Tours are provided on the second and fourth Sundays of each month from May through October of 2022. The tour begins at 2 p.m. and lasts 75-90 minutes. You will learn about iron making in 19th Century Pennsylvania, the architecture of the mansion, the Curtin family history and about the life of the workers on this historic iron plantation.
Guided tours can be arranged at other times by contacting staff well ahead of your planned visit. See the village's contact details on its Facebook page or by visiting www.Curtinvillage.com. There are no fees for the guided tours, but donations are gratefully accepted.
CHEER CLUB
The Senior Cheer Club met on April 7 at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. Club President Larry Butler welcomed those in attendance and said the table grace for the noon luncheon. After the meal, the meeting was called to order and all stood to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and The Lord's Prayer.
The minutes from the March meeting were read by Janie Confer and approved. The roll call of attendance was conducted and there were 19 members and four guests this month. Guests included Gene Auman, Mary Ellen Pletcher, Ann Williams and Relda Williams. We hope that these individuals will become members and attend future meetings with the group.
The treasurers report was given and each paid their $2 dues which will be added to the treasury balance.
Devotions were provided by Judy Cain as she read from Mark 1 verses 1-8 which tells of John the Baptist preparing the way.
The club members sang "Happy Birthday" to Edna Hunter, James Irwin and Gene Auman who were celebrating birthdays this month.
Janie Confer read poems she had written entitled "We Used To" and "Thank You Lord."
As usual, Larry provided some cute stories and jokes that brought laughter to the members.
The door prize was won by Fay Confer this month. She will bring a door prize for the May meeting.
Club members were encouraged to continue to save the caps and lids from household products and bring them to Cheer Club meetings so they can be donated to the Lamar Lighthouse Camp to have recycled into outdoor benches for the campground.
The meeting was adjourned and bingo games were enjoyed.
The next meeting of the Senior Cheer Club will be held at noon on Thursday, May 5, at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. Each is to bring a covered dish to share for the luncheon and your own drink. Also, bring an unwrapped item for the Chinese auction.
Anyone age 55 and over is welcome to attend the meetings. Contact Larry at 570-962-2848 for more info.
