LOGANTON -- Senior citizens of the Loganton area gathered together for food, fellowship, and fun this past Wednesday at the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren, for the monthly Sugar Valley senior luncheon.

The meals, which run September through May, are a partnership between the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren in Eastville, and the Albright United Methodist Church in Loganton, who both have designated days on the monthly calendar.

Kim Geisewite, is the Pastor's wife at the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren, and one of the organizers of the meals there.

"Albright United Methodist's senior meals are held on the second Wednesday of each month, and the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren's are on the fourth Wednesday," she explained.

This week's group enjoyed a delicious meal of lasagna roll-ups, salad, garlic bread, and for dessert, a choice of orange fluff or pumpkin roll.

"These meals are a long standing tradition for the seniors of Sugar Valley, said Kim. "They first began at Albright United Methodist about 25 years ago," she continued. "We joined in and started having them here at the Brethren Church around 2014."

"Of course the seniors get a good, hot, homemade, full meal, but they also get the opportunity to socialize and interact with peers. Everyone loves to spend time with friends their own age." she said. "It's nice to see them having a good time visiting."

"We typically feed around 40 seniors, plus our helpers. Our helpers do such good work," said Kim as she looked towards the bustling kitchen. "They come from churches all over the valley, and today, in addition to members of our own congregation, we had helpers from St. Johns UCC in Tylersville and the Mount Pleasant Community Church in Rosecrans. We also had students from the National Honor Society at the Sugar Valley Charter School who come as a way to earn community service hours."

The luncheons follow Keystone Central School District's early dismissal, delay, and closure schedule, and if the school day is altered due to inclement weather, the event is cancelled for that day.

The meals are as follows for the rest of the 2022/2023 season: April 13, Albright United Methodist Church; April 26, Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren, and May 24, Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren. Please note there will be no lunch at the Albright United Methodist Church in the month of May.

The Albright United Methodist Church is located at 47 East Main Street, Loganton, Pa. 17747; and the Sugar Valley Church of the Brethren is at 2305 East Winter Road, Loganton, Pa. 17747.
