HOWARD -- Senior Cheer Club met in early March after a winter hiatus during January and February.
Club president Larry Butler welcomed the 16 members and two new guests to the luncheon. After everyone had eaten their fill of the potluck lunch, the business meeting was called to order. All stood to recite The Lord's Prayer and the pledge to the flag together.
Judy Cain provided the devotions taken from Matthew 13, verses 47-52.
The minutes from the December meeting were read by club secretary Janie Confer. The treasurer's report was also given.
The roll call of attendance was conducted. The two new guests were Marie Sanner from Ridge Crest and Jane Burnell from Lock Haven. We hope these ladies will continue to join us for future meetings. Each member paid their $2 dues for the month which will be added to the treasury balance.
Happy Birthday wishes were expressed to Rhoda Miller, Relda Williams and Bonnie Walker who are celebrating during March.
We're off to a good start with four new members for 2023 thus far. Larry has a goal to hit a membership of 50 by the end of the year. Currently there are 39 members on the books but not all come regularly. We're hoping that those members can start coming again and to bring along a friend. The FCC is handicapped accessible with no steps, so it's easy for people with walkers or wheel chairs to be able to enter the building from the side entrance.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Marilyn Ream following the death of her daughter, Marjorie Butler. Mary Ellen Pletcher and Fay Confer were also in our prayers as they have had some health problems recently.
A moment of silence was held for FCC board member Sandy Boob who passed away on Feb. 4, 2023.
Sandy was very instrumental in getting some improvements made to the Friendship Community Center and raising money to fund the FCC. Many basket raffles were held under Sandy's watchful eyes to raise funds for local people who were going through very serious health issues. Sandy will certainly be missed. A basket raffle is planned to help with Sandy's final expenses at the end of April. Cheer Club members are encouraged to show our support and to provide baskets or gift cards for the benefit to honor Sandy's memory.
Larry found a version of a senior citizen's 'Jesus Loves Me' song, believed to have been written by Ann Williams' mother. Larry sang the verses and everyone joined in with the chorus.
Fay Confer will bring the door prize for the April meeting and it's Chinese Auction month so members are asked to bring an unwrapped item to play the auction game.
The next meeting of Cheer Club will be held on Thursday, April 6, beginning at noon at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. We're going to have an Easter bonnet parade. Wear your best decorated hat or bonnet for the parade. The quirkier your hat the better. Prizes will be awarded for best decorated hats or bonnets in different categories, so 'go all out' with decorating a hat or bonnet. Larry is imagining magnificent prizes of a Cadillac Escalade and an all expense month long vacation to Hawaii for the winners. (Everyone knows Larry has an overactive imagination, but it's all in good fun and to spread smiles and CHEER!)
Anyone 55 years or older is invited to join us for good food, fellowship and fun at the next Cheer Club meeting on April 6.
