Flags of Honor to be displayed again on Memorial Day weekend
Public invited to sponsor flags in Triangle Park

LOCK HAVEN -- Imagine rows of full-sized American flags fluttering in the May breeze, each one standing tall for a hero, or a mentor or a friend. Imagine reading the names on each flagpole as you move among the flags.
If you are downtown any time during Memorial Day weekend, you won't have to imagine it. All you will need to do is stroll over to Triangle Park to see the 2023 Flags of Honor display.
This is the ninth year in a row that Flags of Honor will fly in the park for this solemn holiday. And, once again, everyone is invited to sponsor a flag in honor or memory of someone special.
The deadline to sponsor a flag is Monday, May 15. The fee remains the same as always: $35 per flag. Funds raised will help local nonprofit causes.
Flag orders are already coming in. Last year, the community sponsored a record-breaking 145 flags, and rows had to be added for all of the flagpoles.
The dramatic display of full-sized U.S. flags on 10-foot poles will begin the evening of Friday, May 26. The park will be filled with red, white and blue all weekend, until the evening of Tuesday, May 30. The flags stay flying for that extra day so that local residents who travel over the long weekend can still see the display.
Some sponsors choose to honor family members with a flag. Others choose a favorite teacher, a friend, a co-worker, a mentor, a veteran, an emergency responder... anyone they know who needs a lift and who would appreciate the gesture.
The name of the person honored is posted on a placard at each flag. In addition, the names of the sponsors and those they honor appear in The Express community newspaper and are listed in the event booklet.
Booklets will be available at the official ceremony in the park Sunday, May 28, at noon.
The Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven organizes Flags of Honor each year, with support from the project's "Angel Business," Nestlerode Contracting Co., Inc.
But the people who sponsor the flags are the ones who really make it happen. They understand how powerful it can be to honor or remember someone in their life by including their name in this awesome display of flags.
Corporate sponsorships for $100 are again available this year. Each corporate sponsor will be named in the booklet and in the newspaper and will receive a window sign.
