PATRIOTS PROGRAM

The Howard Grange will be participating in the National Grange Patriots Program. We will be honoring local veterans from Howard for their service. To be eligible for the award certificate the veteran must have served in World War II, the Korean War, and/or the Vietnam War. There will be an award certificate ceremony, to be announced at a later date. This will be for surviving veterans. If you are a veteran of any of the eligible wars or know a veteran, please submit your/their name, address and phone number to: anitamasden2015@gmail.com.

CURTIN VILLAGE

Volunteers are needed for a clean-up of the Curtin Village property on April 22 from 9 a.m. until noon. Bring your gloves and any small tools (grass clippers, pruners, rakes, etc.) that you can use.

Immediately after the clean-up there will be a celebration of Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin's birthday (in 1815). The celebration will include cake and ice cream. Roland Curtin's son, Andrew Gregg Curtin, was a Pennsylvania Governor (1861-1867) during the Civil War.

The Roland Curtin Foundation is also planning a Family Fun Day on April 30 at 2 p.m. This will include an old-fashioned egg roll down the Charging House hill. Feel free to visit the website (curtinvillage.com) for more info.

YARD SALES

Rote and Salona annual yard sale date has been set to be held on Saturday, April 22. Most people set up on Friday, too.

Snydertown Road and Lamar area yard sales will be April 20-21-22.

Walker Meadows Development yard sale dates will be April 28 and 29.

Howard United Methodist Church's annual Yard Sale will be held May 4, 5 and 6. Thursday shopping hours will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. A variety of items will be for sale including baked goods.

Howard town-wide yard sale dates are always the first Friday and Saturday in May, so that's May 5 and 6 this year. Sometimes people set up their sales on Thursday, too.

Milesburg's spring yard sale dates are May 12 and 13. The fall yard sale dates in Milesburg will be Oct. 6 and 7.

Howard Fire Company's Indoor Yard Sale will be on May 18-20. Drop off days are May 15-17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. No car seats, tires, or TV's will be accepted. The yard sale will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. The kitchen will be open. Any questions, please contact Lana at 814-264- 8140.

THANK YOU

A big THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the Howard Easter Egg Hunt. Event organizer Anita Masden and her side-kick, the Easter Bunny, were overjoyed to have 120 children participate in the hunt this year. A special thank you to those who provided the candy and who helped to fill the goodie bags. Thanks also to Howard Borough's Parks and Rec committee for the wonderful prizes that were provided and awarded.

GOSPEL SING

Milesburg Baptist Church will be hosting a free music event featuring Jeremy Goodling on Sunday, April 16, at 6 p.m. at the church located at 110 Market St., Milesburg. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend.

The Jeremy Goodling Music Ministry states, "Each concert is an opportunity for Jeremy to sing songs with a real message and encouragement, as well as sharing a short testimony and challenge. The songs you would hear at Jeremy's concerts offer a variety of Christian styles that all ages can enjoy."

Admission is free, but donations to the Jeremy Goodling Music Ministry will be accepted and appreciated. Call Lori Trawinski at the church for more info at 814-360-8252.

HOWARD GRANGE

Howard Grange will be selling Grange Fair tickets, so you can buy your season tickets from a Grange member. Everyone who has a camper or a tent at Grange Fair needs a ticket to go through the gates to set up so you can buy yours early. For each ticket that Howard Grange sells they will make $2. COUNTRY JAM

The Back Porch String Band will be hosting their monthly Country Jam at the Yearick Center in Howard on Sunday, April 23, from 2-6 p.m. Bring your instrument and play along with others or just enjoy the afternoon of toe-tapping, hand-clapping tunes at the fire hall. Bring a snack or covered dish to share. A donation basket is passed with the proceeds given to the Howard Fire Company.

BINGOS

Howard Civic Club will be holding a Primitive Bingo at the Howard fire hall on Sunday, April 16. Basket raffle, rip tickets, 50/50 and food will be offered. Doors open at noon and games start at 1 o'clock. Tickets are $25 and available at the door or by contacting Linda 814-280-3013 or Dawn 570-660-7901.

Howard Area Lions Cash Bingo will be held on Thursday, April 20. Doors open at 5:30 and games begin at 6:30. Lions Bingo will be held on May 11 and May 25 before taking a summer break.

Centre Hall Fire Company Cash Bingo will be held on May 5 (first Friday night) at the fire station at 134 N. Witmer Avenue. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Early bird game and rip ticket chances starting at 6:30 p.m. Regular Bingo games start at 7 p.m. Rip off tickets and food are available. This will be the last of the first Friday Bingo's until after the summer break is over.

APRIL EVENTS

Bald Eagle Valley Community United Methodist church will have a homemade ham or chicken pot pie sale on Monday, April 17, at the church. Pre-orders of pot pie at $8 a quart should be called to Janette at 814-883-0893. Drive-thru pick up and walk in sales begin at 4 p.m. and last until sold out.

Millheim Fire Company will be having a Gun Raffle on April 22 from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the fire station. Tickets are available for $20 each, or a bargain deal at six for $100.

Logan Grange #109 is having a soup sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at their Grange hall located at 122 N. Main St., Pleasant Gap. Chicken corn noodle, ham and bean and stuffed peppers are the soup flavors for this sale at $9 for each quart. Pre-orders can be called in using 814-360-5756 or 814-404-1521. A basket raffle will be held at the Friendship Community Center from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 28, and on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. to raise funds to pay for the final expenses of Sandy Boob, the former FCC President who passed away on Feb. 4, 2023. Baskets and donations of gift cards or items for the benefit are needed. There are a lot of restaurants, gas and grocery stores that you can get a gift card from that people really like to win at the benefits. Sandy held several basket benefits to help others in the community when they were going through serious health situations, so we hope that everyone will honor Sandy's memory and contribute to this benefit for her.

SPORTSMENS CLUB

Liberty Township Sportsmen's Association will be having some activities in April that may interest readers.

On April 15 there will be a skeet Bunny Shoot with registration at 9:30 a.m. Meet at the skeet field.

On April 22 there will be a shotgun shoot for women. This is an opportunity for women to learn to shoot trap, 5 stand and skeet. Borrow your man's shotgun (or one can be borrowed) and come to the club's skeet field. Registration limited to 10 women and registration can be done by phone with Renee at 607-425-1377. A safety meeting and coffee will be held at 8 a.m. just before the shoot. Women should bring their eye and ear protection equipment as required.

On April 29 the club will host the annual Children's Fishing Derby at the club pond. The fishing derby is for children ages 12 and under. The derby starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Lunch is provided.
