FREE SOUP
The SWAM (Seasoned Women and Men) group at Blanchard Church of Christ will be sponsoring the soup kitchen on Thursday, April 27, from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Soup flavors this month are cheeseburger and chicken noodle soup. Come for free homemade soup, dessert and fellowship at the church, 161 Beech St., Blanchard.

CURTIN
VILLAGE
Volunteers are needed for a clean-up of the Curtin Village property tomorrow, April 22, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bring your gloves and any small tools (grass clippers, pruners, rakes, etc.) that you can use. Many hands make light work… and then there's a celebration afterward!
In honor of Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin's birthday (in 1815), the celebration will include music, cake and ice cream. Steeped in history at the Eagle Iron Works, musical selections will be provided by The Coburn Brass Band, who will lead the typical Civil War era birthday song followed by the more modern "Happy Birthday" song.
The "Happy Birthday" song was written around 1860 by two school teachers and was titled "The Good Morning Song". Its purpose was to greet the children to school each day. Around 1900, the lyrics were applied to the melody which posed great legal conflicts later on. Typically, "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" was sung at birthdays prior to the popularity of "Happy Birthday."
So, on Saturday we'll work a little, sing a little, eat a little and celebrate the day at Curtin Village.
The Roland Curtin Foundation is also planning a Family Fun Day on April 30 at 2 p.m. This will include an old-fashioned egg roll down the Charging House hill. Your eggs should be regular, hard-boiled eggs and dyed or colored as you desire. This makes it easier to identify the owner of the eggs when they fall at the same time or when there are many rolling eggs during the contest. The egg owner is welcome to use whatever they choose to make their egg distinctive -- could be permanent marker, onion skin dye, crayons and food coloring, etc. Just as a helpful hint, taped-on decorations will not work because they will make it harder to roll the egg.
In keeping with the egg rolling theme, participants will receive a roll of NECCO Wafers. These multi-colored sugar wafers have their origins in a company founded by brothers Oliver R. and Silas Edwin Chase in 1847. By 1901, as a result of a business merger of three confectioner companies, the candy became the product of the New England Confectioner's Company (NECCO) and 122 years later we have NECCO candy to share with you.

YARD SALES
Rote and Salona annual yard sale date has been set to be held on Saturday, April 22. Most people set up on Friday, too.
Snydertown Road and Lamar area yard sales will be April 21-22. St. Mark's Lutheran Church will have a big yard sale on the same dates, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Walker Meadows Development (in Walker Township) yard sale dates will be April 28 and 29.
Howard United Methodist Church's annual Yard Sale will be held May 4, 5 and 6. Thursday shopping hours will be from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5-8 p.m. Friday and Saturday hours will be from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. A variety of items will be for sale including baked goods.
Howard town-wide yard sale dates are always the first Friday and Saturday in May, so that's May 5 and 6 this year. Sometimes people set up their sales on Thursday, too.
Milesburg's spring yard sale dates are May 12 and 13. The fall yard sale dates in Milesburg will be Oct. 6 and 7.
Howard Fire Company's Indoor Yard Sale will be on May 18-20. Drop off days are May 15-17 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

PATRIOTS
PROGRAM
The Howard Grange is participating in the National Grange Patriots Program and needs the names of all the local (living) veterans who served during WWII, the Korean War or the Vietnam War. REUNIONS
Descendants of Andrew Dill and Etta Confer will gather for a reunion on July 22 at noon at Pavilion #6 at Bald Eagle State Park. Please bring a covered dish to share and your choice of drink for the noon meal. Plates and silverware will be provided.
The family hasn't gathered for a few years, so Kaye is asking for donations instead of holding an auction. This will allow more time to visit since there is a lot of catching up to do. Please spread the word to all your family members so they can plan to attend this years reunion.

HOWARD GRANGE
Howard Grange is selling Grange Fair tickets, so you can buy your season tickets from a Grange member. For each ticket that Howard Grange sells they will make $2.
The Grange is also selling PA State Grange 150th (1873-2023) Anniversary Cookbooks with over 450 pages of recipes from grange members. There are recipes from locals like Ben and Maryann Haagen (Walker Grange), Glenn and Nancy Burris (Logan Grange) and Philip Vonada (Penns Valley Grange). I saw some recipes from Marion Grange folks, too. The cookbook is really nice and sells for $25.

COUNTRY JAM
The Back Porch String Band will be hosting their monthly Country Jam at the Yearick Center in Howard this Sunday, April 23, from 2-6 p.m. Bring your instrument and play along with others or just enjoy the afternoon of toe-tapping, hand-clapping tunes at the fire hall. Bring a snack or covered dish to share. A donation basket is passed with the proceeds given to the Howard Fire Company.

BINGOS
Howard Area Lions Cash Bingo will be held on Thursday, April 27. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and games begin at 6:30 p.m. Lions Bingo will be held on May 11 and May 25 before taking a summer break.
Centre Hall Fire Company Cash Bingo will be held on May 5 at the fire station at 134 N. Witmer Avenue. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Early bird game and rip ticket chances starting at 6:30 p.m. Regular Bingo games start at 7 p.m. Rip off tickets and food are available. This will be the last of the first Friday Bingo's until after the summer break is over.
APRIL EVENTS
Millheim Fire Company will be having a Gun Raffle tomorrow, April 22, from 11:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the fire station. Tickets are available for $20 each, or a bargain deal at six for $100.
Logan Grange #109 is having a soup sale from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at their Grange hall located at 122 N. Main St., Pleasant Gap. Chicken corn noodle, ham and bean and stuffed peppers are the soup flavors for this sale at $9 for each quart. Pre-orders can be called in using 814-360-5756 or 814-404-1521. A basket raffle will be held at the Friendship Community Center from 6-9 p.m. on Friday, April 28, and on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m., to raise funds to pay for the final expenses of Sandy Boob, the former FCC President who passed away on Feb. 4, 2023. Baskets and donations of gift cards or items for the benefit are needed. There are a lot of restaurants, gas and grocery stores that you can get a gift card from that people really like to win at the benefits. Sandy held several basket benefits to help others in the community when they were going through serious health situations, so we hope that everyone will honor Sandy's memory and contribute to this benefit for her.

SPORTSMENS CLUB
Liberty Township Sportsmen's Association will be having some activities in April that may interest readers.
Tomorrow, April 22, there will be a shotgun shoot for women. This is an opportunity for women to learn to shoot trap, 5 stand and skeet. Borrow your man's shotgun (or one can be borrowed) and come to the club's skeet field. Registration limited to 10 women and registration can be done by phone with Renee at 607-425-1377. A safety meeting and coffee will be held at 8 a.m. just before the shoot. Women should bring their eye and ear protection equipment as required.
On April 29 the club will host the annual Children's Fishing Derby at the club pond. The fishing derby is for children ages 12 and under. The derby starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. Lunch is provided. Sign-up at www.libertysportsmen.com or call Mark Barner at 570-295-2288 for more info.
