2nd Annual Veterans Mental Health Awareness Walk is May 12
WILLIAMSPORT -- Local veteran Ryan Hayslip will host the second annual Veterans Mental Health Awareness Walk on May 12.
The 24-hour walk will see Hayslip and others walk a 5K course, beginning at the Hepburn Street Riverwalk parking lot in Williamsport. Last year, Hayslip's walk saw him trek through Lycoming County into Clinton County, ending at the Lock Haven VFW along Water Street.
"The walk this year is a 5K Course at the Hepburn Street Riverwalk parking lot, to allow for more flexibility for people to come out and support," Hayslip said. "Anyone is welcome."
Hayslip, who served 8.5 years active-duty in the Army -- with two tours to Iraq -- said he had a hard time adjusting to civilian life.
"Luckily, with the help of my family, the local Vet Center and the Veterans Affairs, I have been able to manage my mental health problems," Hayslip said. "I wanted to find a way to give back to the veterans in my area and let them know they are not alone."
Donations for the event will go toward a variety of local programs that help veterans including: CCVA Military Share or MilitaryShare: VFW 7863, Heroes & Horses and Local VetCenter.
Shirts are also for sale at a cost of $25. Anyone interested in purchasing a shirt may email Hayslip at ryanhayslip@ymail.com.
