CAN TABS
Save your soda and beer can tabs for Geisinger's Ronald McDonald House. Liberty Curtin Elementary in Blanchard is collecting the tabs during the month of May and school representatives will be transporting them to Danville in early June.
You can send your tabs in with any elementary school student or teacher at Liberty Curtin or drop them off at the school office this month.
The school collects the tabs each year to benefit the Ronald McDonald House, so keep on saving the tabs for next school year's tab collection, too!
PATRIOTS PROGRAM
The Howard Grange is participating in the National Grange Patriots Program and needs the names of all the local (living) veterans who served during WWII, the Korean War or the Vietnam War. There will be an awards certificate ceremony, too! If you or someone you know is a veteran that qualifies, please send the veteran's name, address and phone number to anitamasden2015@gmail.com
REUNIONS
Descendants of Andrew Dill and Etta Confer will gather for a reunion on July 22 at noon at Pavilion #6 at Bald Eagle State Park. Please bring a covered dish to share and your choice of drink for the noon meal. Plates and silverware will be provided.
The family hasn't gathered for a few years, so Kaye is asking for donations instead of holding an auction. This will allow more time to visit since there is a lot of catching up to do. Please spread the word to all your family members so they can plan to attend this summer reunion.
Kaye Brown is planning the reunion from her South Carolina home, so if anyone local would like to volunteer to help that would be great. Send Kaye an email at kayebrown@pctechguys.net or find her on Facebook.
HOWARD GRANGE
The next Howard Grange meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Howard United Methodist Church. Everyone is welcome to come and see what the new Howard Grange is all about. Each member brings a non-perishable item or two to keep the church's porch pantry stocked for residents who need an item during the month.
Howard Grange is selling Grange Fair tickets, so you can buy your season tickets from a Grange member. For each ticket that Howard Grange sells they will make $2.
The Grange is also selling PA State Grange 150th (1873-2023) Anniversary Cookbooks with over 450 pages of recipes from grange members. The cookbook is really nice and sells for $25.
For more info call Sandy at 570-772-3558 or Lana at 814-264-8140.
BASKET BENEFIT
A basket raffle will be held on June 3 at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek for Ted Parker. Ted has been diagnosed with stage 4 laryngeal (throat) cancer and is undergoing treatment. Ted has already had surgeries and now travels five days a week to Geisinger in Danville for treatments.
Ted is a landscaper and this is his busiest time of the year with mulching and mowing a lot of grass for his clients in the area, so some of his friends have been pitching in and helping with the work until Ted is able to beat cancer and recover.
In the meantime, there are a lot of extra expenses (gas for all the daily trips to Danville, co-pays and such) that this benefit will help Ted and his wife with.
Ted's sister, Tania, is organizing the benefit and is looking for the community's support in providing a lot of baskets for the event. Call Tania at 570-660-7603 and let her know that she can count on a basket or item (gift cards for gas stations, restaurants or grocery stores are excellent ideas) for the benefit.
BINGOS
Centre Hall Fire Company Cash Bingo will be held tonight at the fire station at 134 N. Witmer Avenue. Doors and the kitchen open at 5 p.m. Early bird game and rip ticket chances start at 6:30 p.m. Regular Bingo games start at 7 p.m. Rip off tickets and food are available. This will be the last of the first Friday Bingos until after the summer break is over.
Howard Area Lions Cash Bingo will be held on May 11 and May 25 before taking a summer break. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and games begin at 6:30 p.m.
A benefit Bingo is being held for Paula Leathers on May 13 at KBR Bingo in the Piper Building, 1 Piper Way, Third Floor, Lock Haven. Elevator service is available.
Paula had been struggling with medical issues which led to her leg having to be amputated. Her husband, Keith, is now helping to take care of her and making sure she gets around and to all of her medical appointments. The couple needs some help with covering their household expenses (mortgage payment, electric, phone bills). Gas gift cards and grocery gift cards would also help the family out, too!
Doors open at 11 a.m. and Bingo begins at 1 p.m. The Bingo benefit will also feature a 50/50 raffle, a Chinese auction/basket raffle and rip ticket chances. The kitchen will be open, too!
Tickets for the benefit Bingo will be $20 and can be reserved by contacting Tiffany at 570-367-8316.
Donations of items for the Chinese auction/basket raffle are needed and will certainly be appreciated in helping the Leathers family.

Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Jacksonville is planning a special weekend of events at the church on May 6 and 7 that the public is invited to attend. Beginning on May 6 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. there will be an open house and a historical artifacts exhibition from the Jacksonville area. There will be old photographs of the church and the community for people to see and reminisce over.
There will be a basket raffle and refreshments to enjoy. At 6:30 there will be an old-fashioned hymn sing.
On Sunday, May 7, the morning worship service begins at 9 a.m. featuring special music and the sermon by Pastor Cindy Killinger. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a brunch to enjoy followed by a presentation at 1 p.m. about local artist Annie Snyder and her painting of the sanctuary mural. The mural is a beautiful work of art to see! Basket raffle winners will be drawn and announced on Sunday afternoon, too!
For more info on the church's activities, feel free to contact Sharon at 814-574-6074.
SANDI'S BENEFIT
Thank you to everyone who supported the benefit for Sandi Boob at the Friendship Community Center last Saturday. There were 67 baskets and items donated and many FCC volunteers were on hand to help in the kitchen, sell tickets and to clean-up afterwards.
The money raised from the benefit will be used to pay for Sandi's final expenses at Singer-Kader-Neff Funeral Home in Howard.
Special thanks to Pam Hevner for baking a Happy Heavenly Birthday cake and cupcakes in honor of Sandi's first birthday in heaven on April 26, 2023. (We miss you Sandi!)
Nancy Shadle, of Beech Creek, was the door prize winner of a free hall rental that she can use within the next year.
The next meeting of the FCC will be held on Monday, May 8, at 7 p.m.
SHOE COLLECTION
Marsh Creek Brethren in Christ Church collected shoes for the Gospel Tide to use in their "Your soles for their Souls" shoe drive. Gospel Tide is going to use the shoes to help support literacy classes in India and microbusinesses in developing countries.
The church had participated in the Tide's shoe drive last year and surpassed their goal of 100 pairs by collecting 199 pairs. Gospel Tide's goal last year was to get 2,500 pairs of shoes by partnering with about 20 churches. Last year a total of 4,032 pairs were collected and received at the Gospel Tide office in Chambersburg, Pa.
This year the church's collection period ran during March and up until April 21.
According to Bonnie Young, the coordinator for the church's shoe collection, "Our goal this year was to collect 100 pairs of shoes towards Gospel Tide's 2,500 goal. We collected more than triple our goal -- 360 pairs of shoes!"
The shoes came from our church congregation members... and other churches in Flemington, Mill Hall and Jacksonville also collected shoes and donated to the cause. A lady in Madisonburg donated 30 pairs of shoes.
"We delivered a truckload of shoes to the Gospel Tide on Friday, April 28. They already had over 3,000 pairs and are still getting deliveries in and counting the pairs until they close out their shoe drive collection on May 7," said Young.
