PATRIOTIC CONTEST
American Legion Post 623 in Beech Creek is sponsoring a house decorating contest during the Memorial Day weekend. The contest is for those who live in the townships of both Liberty and Beech Creek and residents that live in Beech Creek Borough. Prizes will be awarded for the three most patriotic houses. Get busy decorating so you are sure to have your house decorated by noon tomorrow, May 28. You can use flags, flowers, ribbons, balloons or anything else to make your house (or mobile home) the most patriotic for the contest and to show your patriotism and gratefulness for those who fought and died for our freedom.
Residents must pre-register your house before noon on Saturday, May 28. To pre-register your house you must provide your name and GPS address so the judges can find your home. You may drop by the American Legion to pre-register or call the club at 570-962-3886, or Bill Bechdel at 570-660-2568. The judges will be driving around over the weekend to see all of the homes that have been preregistered in the contest to decide on the contest winners.
YARD SALES
Nittany Antique Machinery's Spring Tractor Show and Flea Market will be held June 2-4 at Penns Cave. Free admission.
Loganton and Brokerhoff Heights in Bellefonte yard sales will be June 2-3.
Snow Shoe and Clarence area yard sales will be June 8-10.
Beech Creek-Blanchard community yard sales will be June 9 and 10.
Unionville yard sales will also be on June 9 and 10.
Millheim yard sales will be June 16-17. Also the Springfield Development area near Zion.
Centre Hall yard sales will be June 23 and 24. Mr. Sticky's (sticky buns) will be at the fire hall at 134 N. Witmer Ave. in Centre Hall, and the fire company will also serve sandwiches and drinks both days. Spots are available on the fire company grounds to set up your yard sale items at $20 for the weekend. You're welcome to set up on Thursday and should plan to open extra early on Friday. Mark your calendar that the fire company's monthly Bingo will resume on Friday, Oct. 6.
FOOD
DISTRIBUTION
The Howard United Methodist Church holds food distributions twice a month, the first Thursday and third Friday of the month, beginning at 5 p.m. The next distribution will occur on Thursday, June 1. After recommendations from Pennsylvania State Police, the church will be changing the route of the distribution because of the possibility of other emergencies on the previous route. Help would not be able to respond to that emergency, so taking the recommendations provided to the church, DO NOT start lining up before 4 p.m.
The new route will be as follows: Turn onto Spearing Street in Howard and then make a right onto Rothrock. The traffic will be held there until 4:30 p.m., and then you would make a left onto Black Street, followed by a right turn onto Grove Street and proceed to the church. (Basically, you will just be coming the opposite direction of what you were coming. It's very simple and somebody will be there to direct you.)

CLASS OF 1967
Joyce Beaty will be hosting the 56th class reunion for LHHS Class of 1967 on June 24 at 2 p.m. The Beaty house is located at 153 Beach St., Blanchard. The house is located two houses past the Blanchard Church of Christ. RSVP by June 1 to Landa Rossman at 352-874-3066 or Joyce Beaty, 570-962-3355 (call for details). The charge will be $5 per person made payable to LHHS Class of 1967 and mailed to Georgette Rupert, 57 Mapes Road, Beech Creek, PA 16822.
CAN TABS
Save your soda and beer can tabs for Geisinger's Ronald McDonald House. Liberty Curtin Elementary in Blanchard is collecting the tabs during the month of May and then school representatives will be transporting them to Danville in early June.
You can send your tabs in with any elementary school student or teacher at Liberty Curtin or drop them off at the school office before the last day of school on June 1.
The school collects the tabs each year to benefit the Ronald McDonald House, so keep on saving the tabs for next school year's tab collection, too!
PATRIOTS
CEREMONY
The Howard Grange is participating in the National Grange Patriots Program to honor local, living veterans who served during WWII, the Korean War or the Vietnam War.
The Patriots Ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 1 p.m. at the Howard VFW pavilion. After the ceremony, light snacks and drinks will be provided for veterans receiving the certificates and their families.
REUNIONS
Descendants of Wilson and Hazel (Mace) Miller will gather for their reunion on Saturday, May 27. Bring a hot and cold covered dish to share for the noon picnic lunch that will be held at Bill Rogers' pavilion, 1051 Fairview Road, Howard. Bring a wrapped item for the auction and extra cash for the raffles. This year the family of Ray and Isabelle Miller are in charge of the reunion games and activities. BASKET
BENEFIT
A basket raffle will be held on June 3 at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek for Ted Parker. Ted has been diagnosed with stage 4 laryngeal (throat) cancer and is undergoing treatment. Ted has already had surgeries and now travels five days a week to Geisinger in Danville for treatments.
Ted is a landscaper and this is his busiest time of year with mulching and mowing a lot of grass for his clients in the area, so some of his friends have been pitching in and helping with the work until Ted is able to beat cancer and recover.
In the meantime, there are a lot of extra expenses (gas for all the daily trips to Danville, co-pays and such) that this benefit will help Ted and his wife, Jennifer, with.
Ted's sister, Tania, is organizing the benefit and is looking for the community's support in providing a lot of baskets for the event. Call Tania at 570-660-7603 and let her know that she can count on a basket or item (gift cards for gas stations, restaurants or grocery stores are excellent ideas) for the benefit.
Please keep Ted (and Jennifer) in your prayers, too!
FREE PICNIC
Howard United Methodist Church is having a free picnic thanking our moms and dads on Sunday, June 4, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church at 144 W. Main St. in Howard. The picnic will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans, salads, desserts and drinks that can be eaten inside or outside the church or for take-outs.
Reservations are not necessary, but with a reservation you will receive a goodie bag!

PAINTING
PROJECT
Howard Mayor Deb Simoncek is looking for volunteers to help improve our borough hall in Howard. The borough building is badly in need of painting, which will require scrapping first to remove old paint and then maybe a day to get the new paint on (if enough help). The condition of the wood does not allow for a power wash to get the
old paint off. Howard Borough will provide paint and the scaffolding.

MEMORIAL SERVICES
Howard Area Lions will have a Memorial Ceremony this evening, May 26, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Foster Sayers Memorial near the spillway area of Sayers Dam. Be sure to check out the newest bricks in the Walk of Honor at the flags and Sayers statue site.
Romola Bible Church in Marsh Creek is having memorial services on Sunday, May 28, at 2:30 p.m.
Jacksonville Cemetery will have a memorial service in the cemetery on Sunday, May 28, at 4 p.m.
American Legion Post 623 in Beech Creek will be hosting the Memorial Day parade and will be holding cemetery memorial services, too. Before the parade starts services will be held at Hays-Fearon-Bossert Cemetery at 9 a.m.; Clark's Cemetery at 9:15 a.m. and at Liberty Baptist Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.
Advent Cemetery in Moose Run (between Milesburg and Yarnell) will hold memorial services on Memorial Day at 10 a.m. There will be music by the Stauffer Family Band and the Advent Museum will be open afterward.
Eagle Cemetery will have services on Memorial Day at 1 p.m. Amy Kowatch will be the speaker. Eagle Cemetery is located along old 220 near the Curtin Church in rural Howard.
Schencks Cemetery's memorial service will be on May 29 at 2 p.m. The speaker will be Matt Maris, history teacher at Bellefonte High, local historian and co-owner of Local Historia LLC.
Boalsburg will be observing memorial activities all weekend long. Boalsburg Fire Company is having their carnival. The firemen's parade is on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Cemetery Memorial Ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. on Monday. Over 100 arts, crafts and food vendors will be set up on Church and Main Streets, and there's a car show on Monday, too.
ADVENT CHURCH
Last year marked the beginning of the Music at the Advent series for the Advent Historical Society. After three wonderful events in 2022, the Advent Historical Society is proud to announce there will be three events for the 2023 season starting with May 29. All events are free to the public and will be held at the historic Advent Church at 1303 Moose Run Road, Bellefonte. Each event will include refreshments and opportunities to visit the on-site museum and tour the Advent Cemetery.
Music at the Advent: A Tribute to Times Past on Monday, May 29, at 10 a.m.
Following the Memorial Day observances at the Advent Cemetery, all are invited to sing along with the Stauffer Family Band in a program of traditional patriotic songs and hymns. The museum and gallery will be open to view the new exhibit, Home Folks: Everyday Life in Holt's Hollow, with refreshments of coffee, pies and cakes provided by members and friends.

HERITAGE DAYS
Porter Township will be holding the annual Heritage Days 5K Run/Walk at Brown's Hill Tavern on June 3. Registration is from 8-10 a.m. and the "colorful" run/walk begins at 10 a.m. Cost to register is $25 for adults; $20 for ages 12-17; and those under age 12 can run or walk for free. You can also pre-register online at www.porterheritagedays.com. There will be five different "color" stations during the course!
Proceeds from this Run/Walk will benefit the Porter Township Heritage Day Festival that will be held on June 10. If you have trouble with pre-registering online call Linda at 570-295-1052 or send her an email at jely2@comcast.net for more info.
The 7th Annual Heritage Day Festival will be held on June 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Recreation Park in Lamar. Local celebrities are needed to volunteer to sit in the dunk tank!
There's live music, a kid's tractor pull, craft and food vendors, corn hole tourney and so much fun for the whole family. The festival will end with a fireworks display at 9:15 in the field across from Dotterer Equipment on Route 64.
