Liberty-Curtin Elementary School recently hosted its first Hunter-Trapper Education (HTE) course to prepare new hunters in our community to hunt and trap safely, legally, ethically and responsibly. All 28 participants passed the course and are now eligible to obtain their first PA Junior Hunting License. The six-hour class event was organized by HTE instructor (and LCES 4th grade teacher) Prella Smith along with PA Deputy Game Wardens Jason Smith and Roy Schaeffer.
HTE is offered free of charge by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The all-volunteer instructors are trained and certified by the Game Commission's Bureau of Information and Education. Keystone Central School District made the facility available with all fees waived. A cookout lunch was generously provided by Kenny Riley of Tyrone and Eric McCloskey of Marsh Creek.
This community event was purposefully timed to allow the new hunters to apply for Antlerless Deer Licenses. Smith stated that given the positive feedback about the course date and location, she is moving forward to make this an annual event for the community.
