MILLHEIM -- It's festival season and if you want to experience a few nights of old fashioned fun, pop in to the Millheim Fireman's Carnival this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, June 15 to 17.
The event takes place at the fire company grounds, directly behind the station, opening each day at 6 p.m. However, the official start of the weekend happens tonight at 7 p.m. when the fire whistle blows, signaling the start of the annual Millheim parade.
MVFC Vice president, carnival chairman, Hunter Homan, hopes to see a big turnout from the community, stressing the importance of the event.
"The carnival itself brings the community together, and it helps to raise money for the fire company to better itself," he said. "A lot of the money raised goes toward the purchase of new equipment and gear that we use everyday. Proceeds also go to cover the insurance on the trucks."
This year's entertainment will suit every ear with Qwik Rock DJ Ricky LaPean on Thursday evening, DJ Ted Homan on Friday, and on Saturday, the popular 80s tribute band, Giants of Science, will take the stage.
There will be nightly raffles for grand prizes, as well as a 100 prize ticket drawing on Saturday evening.
A nostalgic part of the carnival for all ages are the games. A few of the most favored are the fish game, duck pond, soda ring toss, bounce house, poker stand, balloon darts, a money tree and everyone's favorite -- the dime pitch.
No Central Pennsylvania carnival would be complete without a tractor pull, and the Millheim Fire Company will have two during carnival weekend. The garden tractor pull is Saturday morning with registration at 9 a.m., with the pull at 10 a.m.
Visitors are asked to note the change in the schedule for this year's kiddie pedal pull, ages 3 to 9. The kiddie pedal pull will take place on Friday evening with registration at 6 p.m. with the pull at 7 p.m.
Most people attend the local carnivals to visit old friends and eat good food. The Millheim carnival will have plenty of both.
While attendees catch up with old friends on one of the benches in front of the main stage, they can nibble on some great fair style foods. The grounds will be full of delicious, fried and sweet treats like hot sausage sandwiches, cheesesteaks, french fries, funnel cakes, pizza, deep fried Oreos, hamburgers and hot dogs and fresh squeezed lemonade.
On Saturday evening beginning at 10 p.m., one of the biggest fundraisers within the carnival takes place -- the cake auction.
This event is rain or shine.
