Master Gardener

program accepting

applications

Do you have an interest in gardening, a desire to help others, and a willingness to learn more about horticulture? If so, then join us on your journey in becoming a certified Master Gardener. Classes begin soon.

Penn State Extension in Clinton County is now accepting applications for the 2024 Penn State Extension Master Gardener program. This program consists of a volunteer training course designed to provide experienced home gardeners with the information and skills necessary to share their experience and knowledge with others. Weekly classes will be held from the beginning of October 2023 to the end of March 2024.

The mission of the Penn State Master Gardener program is to support Penn State Extension by utilizing research-based information to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship.

Master Gardener Trainees will receive 60 hours of hybrid instruction, both in-person and online. Trainees will attend weekly instruction via Zoom by experienced horticulture educators throughout the state. Trainees will also participate in monthly hands-on workshops in areas such as plant propagation, pruning, and entomology, to name a few. During the first year, Master Gardener trainees must agree to volunteer 50 hours to Penn State Cooperative Extension. New this year is the ability for trainees to start working towards their 50 hours of volunteer service at the start of basic training in October. Trainees become certified Master Gardeners once basic training requirements are complete. Master Gardeners are required to complete 20 volunteer hours and 10 continuing education hours in each subsequent year to maintain Master Gardener certification.

There is a program fee to cover the cost of training materials and expenses. Scholarships are available upon request. Applications are being accepted through Oct. 1, 2023.
