The Christians with Rhythm are presenting a Christmas Cantata on Sunday, Jan. 7, at 3 p.m., at the Howard Christian Church. All are invited.
WINTER REMINDERS
With snow in the forecast and colder temperatures settling in on us, please remember to keep your sidewalks cleared of ice and snow and put down some anti-skid material so that people are able to use the sidewalks without slipping or falling. It's a nice idea to shovel the sidewalks for those who cannot do it for themselves.
It's a good idea to check on your elderly neighbors and those who cannot get out regularly, too. Offer to pick up a few groceries for them and make sure that they are staying warm and healthy.
Please take a minute to shovel out the fire hydrants during the wintertime so that the fire department can easily access the hydrants if needed. Even if the hydrants are not on your property, it's always a good idea to take the time to clear the snow and ice away to aid the fire company. Who knows, it might be your house the fire company needs the hydrant water for.
CEMETERY MEETING
Jacksonville Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m., at the Marion Township building. All lot owners and those interested in the well-being of the association are encouraged to come and to bring any ideas or concerns you may have. The cemetery association is always looking for volunteers. For more info, call Pam at 814-383-2562.
DOG LICENSES
It's time to renew your dog license for the upcoming year. Applications are available online at the Centre County website or at participating stores in and around the region. Dog licenses can also be purchased over the counter at the Centre County Treasurer's office in the Willowbank Building in Bellefonte. Call the Treasurer's office at 814-355-6810 for more info.
LIONS NEWS
Howard Area Lions Food Bank will be open on Jan. 8 for Centre County residents that live in the Lions servicing area which includes Howard, Blanchard, Hunter Run, Marsh Creek, Monument, Orviston, Mount Eagle, Jacksonville and Lamar areas. The food bank is open from noon until 3 p.m. at the former Beech Creek Elementary.
Please remember to bring your sturdy boxes back each month. The Lions are having trouble finding enough sturdy boxes, so if you have any larger boxes that will work for food distribution please bring them along so there will be enough boxes to fill for food bank recipients each month. The small produce boxes will not work for the food bank since larger boxes are needed.
Howard Area Lions will hold Lions Bingo at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall on Thursday, Jan 11, and again on Thursday, Jan. 25. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo begins at 6:30 p.m.
Milesburg Lions Club holds their Bingo every Thursday evening at the Milesburg Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:45 p.m.
WINTER GIVE-AWAY
Curtin United Methodist Church is having a winter coat/clothing give-away on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church which is located at 305 Curtin Village Road, Howard (near the historic Curtin Mansion). Donations of slightly used clothing and winter apparel are being accepted. Make arrangements to drop off your donations by calling Larry at 814-355-9588.
A FEW LEFT
Howard Parks and Rec committee still has their 2024 calendars for sale along with this year's tree ornament, a snowflake. Both the calendars and ornaments are $10 each and benefit the beautification and upkeep of the local parks in town. This year there will be stickers, too, for $3 a sheet. There are a few of the calendars and snowflakes left yet that can be purchased by calling Debbie at 814-625-0054.
EARLY BIRD DONATIONS
Centre Hall Fire Company will have their Friday Bingo on the first Friday of each month at the fire station. The first Bingo of 2024 will be held this evening. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; early bird game is at 6:30 p.m. and regular Bingo starts at 7 p.m. Food and rip tickets are also available.
If you bring three paper products to the Jan. 5 Bingo you will receive the Early Bird game board free. Paper products that should be brought include 3-packs of facial tissues and 3-packs of paper towels and four roll packs of toilet tissue.
The fire company is collecting these items to donate to Centre Hall's Grace United Methodist Church's food bank.
Tickets are also available for the fire company's Gun Raffle set for May 18, 2024. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the first Friday Bingo's or from any fire company member.
FIRE CO. NEWS
Miles Township (Rebersburg) Fire Company is having a Winter Raffle drawing on Jan. 8 during their fire company monthly meeting. Tickets are $10 each or 3/$20. There are lots of cash prizes to win along with the top prize of an Amish built storage shed valued at $6,500 that has been donated by Bigfoot Barns. Proceeds will help the fire company purchase agricultural rescue equipment.
Millheim Fire Company has tickets for their cash and gun raffle planned for next April on sale now. Tickets are $20 or bargain priced at 6/$100. See any fire company member to get tickets.
SHOE DRIVE
Marsh Creek Brethren in Christ Church is again gathering shoes to support The Gospel Tide's annual shoe drive that is being held from Jan. 2 through March 6. The drive is called "Your Soles for Their Souls." New shoes or those that have been gently worn and still in great condition are being collected in all sizes ranging from youth to adults. Sneakers, shoes and boots are needed, as long as they are new or in really good condition.
Area churches and individuals are encouraged to donate and local pick-up is available by calling Bonnie at 570-962-2665. Bonnie lives just below Beech Creek, but there are also other congregation members spread out from Lamar, Mill Hall, Howard, Orviston, Bellefonte and Julian that can meet to pick up your donated shoes.
This is the third year that the Marsh Creek Church has participated in Gospel Tide's Shoe Drive. The Tide's goal is to collect 5,000 pairs of shoes during this year's drive. To learn more about The Gospel Tide's mission, visit www.thetide.org
SOUP SALE
The first Soup Sale of 2024 will be Thursday, Jan.18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Howard United Methodist Church. Eat in or take out is available. Pre-orders for quarts of soup should be made by Sunday, Jan. 13. Contact Patti at 814-625-2182. Soup comes in freezable containers and the cost is $8 for lunch or quarts of soup. Proceeds from soup sales are used to help those locally in our area.
