SUNDAY CONCERTS

The Summer Concert Series at Lamar Lighthouse Camp is winding down, so you'll want to make sure to enjoy the upcoming Sunday evening concerts in the campground's multi-purpose pavilion. The concerts start at 7 p.m. and the public is invited. The concerts are free but a love offering is taken each week.

New Journey will be taking the stage on Aug. 25. Randy and Marli Ministries will be performing on Sept. 1, followed by Texas Star on Sept. 8. The last concert of the summer will feature Glory Way on Sept. 15.

Seating is provided or you can bring your own lawn chair for a more comfortable evening. Lamar Lighthouse Camp is located along Route 64, two miles south of Interstate 80 exit 173.

YARD SALES

It wasn't a good weather day last Saturday for the Lemont Community Yard Sale, so the rain date of tomorrow will be used for residents to set up their sales.

Madisonburg Community Yard Sales will be held on Sept. 5, 6, and 7.

Milesburg's fall yard sale dates are Oct. 4-5.

LEMONT CONCERTS

Concerts are held each Friday evening, from 7:30-9 p.m., on the Lemont Village Green, 133 Mount Nittany Road, Lemont. Tonight’s concert features Acoustic Artifacts, a duo of seasoned acoustic musicians, Eileen Christman and Jerre Price, performing acoustic classic rock music from the 1960’s to today. The group performed earlier this week at the Grange Fair.

If there is light rain -- the concert is on, bring your lawn chairs, umbrellas or pop-up canopies. Thunder and lightning will see the concert moved to the Granary, so check the website,

www.lemontvillage.org, for info.

Donations are being collected to benefit the restoration of the train track side of the railroad building. Work is nearly finished, with the back exit bridge funding aided by community members, a recent grant from the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau and Centre Gives donations.

Scout Troop 367 will be selling ice cream cones, so make a donation and enjoy the ice cream and music on the Village Green.

Next Friday, Aug. 30, the concert will feature Jim Colbert and Steve Van Hook. With Steve on vocals and guitar the duo performs reflecting on daily life and spinning tales of the past, while Jim's colorful vocals combined with artful guitar, banjo, ukulele and harmonica bring a fine night of indie folk rock to the concert series.

COUNTRY JAM

Country Jam will be held at the Yearick Center on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 2-6 p.m. Hosted by the Back Porch String Band, this jam session is free and open to the public to come and enjoy the afternoon of music. If you play an instrument, bring it along and jam with the other musicians there, or just sit back and enjoy the afternoon of 'pickin' and grinnin' at the Howard fire hall.

Bring a snack to share and a few dollars to drop into the basket to benefit the Howard Fire Company.

SPECIAL MUSIC

McElhattan Pathway to Christ Church will have special music this Sunday, Aug. 25, beginning at 10 a.m. Fishers of Men will be performing at the church and all are invited to attend. Dress casually and come to enjoy the special music and friendly atmosphere. The church is located at 502 McElhattan Drive, McElhattan.

POT PIE SALE

Wingate Faith Church will be starting up their pot pie sales again. The first sale of fall will be on Monday, Sept. 9. It's best to pre-order your quarts of ham or chicken pot pie (homemade bread is included) by calling Janette at 814-883-0893. Quarts are $8 and come in freezable containers so you can stock up. The sale then begins at 4 p.m. in the church parking lot where you drive in and get yours.

Mark your calendars for future pot pie sales on Oct. 14 and Nov. 11.

The church is located at 111 Runville Road, Bellefonte, which is right behind the Sheetz in Wingate.

CURTIN VILLAGE

Sunday, Aug. 25, will feature two new highlights at the Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village. The 2 p.m. tour will launch the recently completed orientation video providing viewers with 18-minutes of historic images, present day drone footage and an introduction to the site where iron was once produced, where the workers lived, how the canal and rail transportation operated and see the grist mill, church and company store offering services.

This is a great opportunity to join Iron Works volunteers for this historic occasion. No reservation is needed and all ages are welcome. Monetary donations are appreciated to support the mission of the all-volunteer, nonprofit Roland Curtin Foundation to preserve, interpret and maintain this unique place.

The video was an immense undertaking and was completed with the financial support of the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, the Centre County Board of Commissioners, Centre Gives donors, the nonprofit Curtin Foundation and the time and dedication of several volunteers.

Later on Sunday, at 7:30 p.m., you can settle in for the evening sitting around a campfire, making S'mores and talking about Curtin history before setting off at sunset for brief tours of the iron furnace complex and Curtin Mansion. This special tour is appropriate for school-aged children to adults. Reservations are required with a $10 donation/per person for this event. RSVP today, Aug. 23, with the number in your party to curtinvillage@gmail.com, then pay when you arrive. Or, secure your place by paying in advance via online, Paypal or Venmo. (Find QR Codes on the Donation page at www.curtinvillage.com).

A limited number of battery-operated lanterns are available, so you are welcome to bring your own BATTERY-OPERATED lantern. (No kerosene lanterns will be allowed.) Comfortable walking shoes are a must for this outdoor tour.

If you miss these tours, you'll want to mark your calendars for Sept. 8 and Sept. 22, at 2 p.m., when the tours will be offered again.

Plan to visit Curtin Village during their Heritage Day on Sept. 14 and again for Apple Fest on Oct. 19. Train excursions will be available to Curtin Village from Bellefonte for Apple Fest.

Contact Sue at 570-220-9290 or visit the Facebook and Instagram sites for more info.

FOOD DISTRIBUTION

Howard United Methodist Church will have their food distribution on Thursday, Sept. 5, beginning at 5 p.m. This will be the only distribution date during the month of September at the church. Please do not line-up before 4 p.m. as this sometimes blocks driveways and hinders others in the neighborhood. Call Patty at 814-625-2182 for food bank info.

FREEZERS NEEDED

The Howard Area Lions Food Bank in Beech Creek lost one of their freezers used to store the frozen foods given away at distribution. If anyone has a freezer they would like to donate to the Lions Club, it would be very much appreciated. The freezer can be about 54 inches wide, but no wider, to fit through the doorway.

A freezer is needed quickly, so please call Ron Davy at 570-962-2407 if you have one to donate. The Lions will be happy to arrange for pick-up and loading of the freezer.

If the Lions aren't able to find a donated freezer soon, then they will have to buy a new one, and if that's the case monetary donations to help with the purchase of a new freezer would also be appreciated.

LIBRARY EVENTS

Friendship Community Library is hosting several events to wrap up the month of August that you and your family may be interested in attending. You can check their Facebook page or call Courtney at 570-962-2048 for more details.

Art Class with George Stefanski will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. for those 12 and older. Walk-ins are welcome. The class is free and will be held on Aug. 26.

Children's Movie Night on Aug. 29 will feature "Shrek." The movie starts at 4:30 p.m. and is free. Drinks are allowed but they must be in a resealable container with a lid to prevent spills.

Friendship Community Library is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 3-7 p.m. The library is located in the Friendship Community Center at 127 Main St., Beech Creek.

REUNION

The Meckley Reunion will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 2, at noon at Sayers Dam. Lunch will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by the business meeting at 2 p.m. and games. RSVP soon to Pam at 814-404-4598 so she has an idea on how many are coming so children's games can be planned. Bring food and beverages to share along with serving utensils as needed. New this year will be a prize raffle.

BASKET BENEFIT

Angel Falls is planning to host a basket raffle benefit for her sister-in-law, Dena Falls, on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek. Dena has a very aggressive form of breast cancer and is currently undergoing treatment. Dena and her husband Ben live in Marsh Creek and have four children.

Donations of baked goods and raffle prizes are needed and can be dropped off at the community center on Friday, Aug. 30, from 6-8 p.m., or contact Angel for local drop off or pick ups by calling 570-502-3176.

In addition to the basket raffle there will be a bake sale, a 50/50 drawing and food available from the kitchen.

LIONS NEWS

Howard Area Lions Food Bank distribution will be on Monday, Aug. 26, from noon to 3 p.m., at the former Beech Creek Elementary School. Bring back your sturdy boxes for food bank use.

Notice this is a change in the food bank distribution schedule because the Lions have been busy parking cars during Grange Fair week, so the distribution won't be held until Aug. 26. This is the distribution for those living in Beech Creek Borough and BC Township and those in Centre County who missed their distribution day earlier this month.

Milesburg Lions Club holds their Bingo every Thursday evening at the Milesburg Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and games begin at 6:45 p.m.

BENEFIT LUNCH

McElhattan Pathway to Christ Church is holding a benefit lunch on Saturday, Sept. 21, to raise funds for the family of Keith "Wink" Winkleman. Keith, 53, was killed in a traffic accident while driving a logging truck on July 2.

The drive-thru lunch will begin at 11 a.m. and features a platter holding a hot sausage sandwich, macaroni salad, chips and a cookie. You get to provide a donation of your choosing for the meal to benefit Keith's family. Come early to get your lunch while supplies last!

A Celebration of Keith's Life is being planned for October, with the details being announced soon.
