The Nittany Valley Amish are hosting a benefit dinner on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Walker Township Fire Company in Hublersburg. The meal runs from noon to 7 p.m. with your choice of dining hour. Prices are $21 for adults; $19 for those 65 and over and for ages 11-17; $8 for kids 5-10. Reservations can be made by calling Sylvia at 814-810-7959 or Dorothy at 814-810-8664. This benefit meal will help with the financial needs at the Amish parochial schools. The Amish community doesn't accept governmental aid for their schools, so this event helps to offset the expenses for educating the Amish children during the school year.

HERITAGE DAY
Curtin Village will be having a Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
At the Antiques and Collectibles tent you'll be able to shop for treasures and collectibles that have been donated. You can provide donations of your own as well. The donations will be sold to raise money for the Roland Curtin Foundation and Curtin Village.
During Heritage Day there will also be a Pop Up Museum displaying Civil War artifacts and relics. Help to keep history alive by bringing your items and stories to share.
The Hertigage Day fundraiser is sponsored by the Roland Curtin Foundation for the Preservation of Eagle Furnace, a volunteer-managed 501(c)3 nonprofit. The cost to attend is $5 per person over the age of 5. Some demonstrators and presenters will have items for sale.
Walk-thru tours of the mansion and iron works are available throughout the day using maps and detailed signage. Volunteers will be available to answer questions. A new orientation video will be shown every 30 minutes beginning at 10 a.m.
The Coburn Brass Band will be there playing at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Bring your camera and take fall family photos using Curtin's excursion wagon as a beautiful background.
Local historian and Bellefonte High School teacher, Matt Maris, will be providing information about Canal Locks and show how they worked by using a canal lock model loaned by the Clinton County Historical Society.
Log hewing will be demonstrated by Brett Cowan of The Gully Shop. There will also be demonstrations of blacksmithing and tin smithing. Antique jewelry will be displayed and sold.
Children can play Victorian-era games.
The kitchen will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a menu of soup, sloppy joes, hot dogs, vegetarian chili and desserts. Gluten-free products are also available. Cash only for the kitchen.
The Foundation hopes to raise $3260 -- a dollar for each pound of the last piece of charcoal fired, cold-blast iron made in Pennsylvania, and possibly the nation. The 1.5-ton slab of partly smelted pig iron was recovered from Eagle Furnace during its 1976-78 reconstruction. The slab rests today beside the reconstructed casting house, a fitting memorial to an important chapter in Pennsylvania's industrial history.
Visit the Facebook page for more event details or the Curtin Village website, www.curtinvillage.com, for upcoming events happening there.
Mark your calendars for tours of Curtin village on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2 p.m. and Apple Fest will be held on Oct. 19. Train excursions will be available to Curtin Village from Bellefonte for Apple Fest.
