TURKEY SHOOT
There will be a Turkey Shoot at the Liberty Township Sportsmen's Club on Sunday, Oct. 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Registration starts at 9 a.m. The club is located along the Marsh Creek Road, rural Howard.
BREAKFAST BENEFIT
Susquehanna Valley Big Twins Motorcycle Club is hosting an All You Can Eat Breakfast Benefit Buffet tomorrow, Oct. 19, from 7-11 a.m., at the SVBTMC Club House, 84 Harley Drive, Lock Haven, to benefit the family of Easton Reid Shady.
Colton and Hailey Shady have experienced the heart-breaking death of their youngest son, Easton Reid, on July 19, 2024. Easton was just three months old and the younger brother of Tate.
The breakfast buffet will cost just $10 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-12; and those ages 5 and under can eat for free. In addition to the breakfast buffet there will also be a 50/50 drawing and a Chinese auction featuring many unique baskets and gifts.
Baskets for the auction prizes can be donated to the breakfast benefit by contacting the SVBT Club by calling 570-769-7287 or by emailing to svbtmc@comcast.net where arrangements for dropping off the donations can be worked out.
TROMBONES
The Penn State Trombones will be in concert at the Howard United Methodist Church this Sunday, Oct. 20. We had thought they would be there last week, but instead are coming this Sunday. Come hear the PSU students playing their trombones and please drop a little cash in the case for them. The worship service is from 9-9:45 a.m. followed by Sunday School from 10:15-10:45 a.m. There is a greeting and fellowship time between the services.
APPLE FEST
Curtin Village Apple Fest -- a family-friendly fundraiser -- will be held tomorrow, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the historic iron plantation in Howard, Pa.
This year's Apple Fest has new vendors as well as returning activities from 2023. The menu includes all locally made and produced items.
Visitors can purchase Ron Beck's roasted pork on homemade buns with homemade potato chips and pepper slaw for $12. Some may elect to add wine or hard cider from Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery. They'll also find a variety of local cheeses, spreads and bread. And, of course, apple butter and fresh apple cider will be available. Visitors should bring a clean jug if they want to purchase cider to take home.
Children and families will be able to participate in pumpkin painting, straw-bale climbing, corn husk doll making, a Victorian dress-up photo booth, watch cider being pressed and tour the mansion and furnace -- all for free with $5 paid admission to the Apple Fest. Children under the age of 10 receive free admission.
Members of the State College Area Irish Sessions will again entertain Apple Fest goers throughout the day. Also, back by popular demand are the goats from the McHugh Family Farm. A fee of $3 is charged for petting and photos with the animals.
The 2024 Curtin Apple Fest preservation partners include: Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society, Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery, Goot Essa, Ron Beck Pig Roasting, Mountaintop Baking, Walnut Lane Farm, Nan's Donuts, the Bathgate Family, the McHugh Family Farm and State College Area Irish Sessions.
TRUNK OR TREAT
New Hope Fellowship Church is having a Trunk or Treat on Halloween, Oct. 31, from 6-8 p.m.
In addition to lots of treats being given out, there will be hot chocolate and the first 50 children will receive a coupon for a free kids meal at the Texas Roadhouse.
The church is located along Route 64 at 6436 Nittany Valley Drive, Mill Hall.
VETERAN'S BREAKFAST
There will be a free Veteran's Breakfast at the Beech Creek American Legion on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 7-11 a.m. All local veteran's (and one guest) are invited to attend. Reservations must be made before Nov. 1 by calling Billie at 570-660-3371.
BOOKS & MORE
St. Mark Lutheran Church in Snydertown, rural Howard, will hold their annual free book fair and costless closet tomorrow, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Lots of free books, puzzles, games, cd's and dvd's will be available as well as gently used clothing.
There will also be food and baked goods available for sale with the money going to helping those in the community.
For those attending the event, you are invited to bring an unexpired food item or to give a monetary donation to help the St. Mark Food Pantry that serves the region.

YARNELL DINNER
The Yarnell Church is having an Italian Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 4-6 p.m., at the Yarnell Community Center. The meal will feature spaghetti Alfredo, garlic bread, salad and desserts. The cost is a donation (suggested at least $10 per meal). Sit down dining or take-out meals will be available. SOUP SALE
Logan Grange #109 in Pleasant Gap is having a soup sale tomorrow, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m., or until they've sold out. Soup flavors are chicken corn noodle, white chili with chicken or stuffed pepper. Soup is $9 a quart. Preorder by calling 814-360-5756 or by email to logangrange109@gmail.com. You can also check out their Facebook page for ordering. Walk-ins will also be accepted while the soup lasts. The grange hall is located at 122 N. Main St., Pleasant Gap. The grange is also planning a soup sale on Nov. 16.

Howard Lions will be at Punkin Chunkin at Sayers Dam with their food trailers on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Howard Area Lions Food Bank will be open on Monday, Oct. 21, from noon to 3 p.m., at the former Beech Creek Elementary. Bring your sturdy boxes for future food bank use.
Howard Area Lions Bingo will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m.
LIBRARY EVENTS
Friendship Community Library is hosting several events in October that you and your family may be interested in attending. You can check their Facebook site or call Courtney at 570-962-2048 for more details.
Art Class with George Stefanski will be held on Monday's from 4:30-6 p.m. for those 12 and older. Walk-ins are welcome. The class is free and will be held on Oct. 21.
Just in time for the holiday baking season, there will be a cookie decorating class on Oct. 22 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The class is free, but registration is required by calling 570-962-2048 or by emailing Friendship@rosslibrary.org
Friendship Community Library is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 3-7 p.m. The Library is located in the Friendship Community Center at 127 Main St., Beech Creek.
FIRE NEWS
Howard Fire Company's Punkin Chunkin will be held on Saturday at Bald Eagle State Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Walker Township Fire Company's annual gun raffle will be on Oct. 19, from 5-11 p.m., at the fire station in Hublersburg. Tickets are $10 and available at the door.
SCOUTING FOR FOOD
Howard Scout Troop 353 will be "Scouting for Food" in Howard on Saturday, Oct. 26. The scouts will be passing out door hangers this week asking for donations of non-perishable food items to benefit the local food bank.
Please put your food donations in a plastic bag and sit them out on your porch before 8 a.m. next Saturday. The scouts will be going door to door to pick up the donations on Saturday morning.

OCC SPEAKER
The Operation Christmas Child fall speaker tour is in our area. Come hear the story of Dioany Yosuino from Venezuela, a young lady who received a simple shoebox as a girl living in the Venezuelan Amazon. Learn how this simple shoebox impacted her life. Admittance is free to all on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m., at The Park Forest Baptist Church, 3030 Carnegie Drive, State College.
