Discovery Space invites K through 12 schools, scout troops to help name baby stingray

STATE COLLEGE -- Discovery Space, a hands-on science center dedicated to inspiring and engaging the community, is inviting K-12 classrooms and scout troops to participate in a special Stingray Naming Contest for a new exhibit in its Marine Life Center.

In partnership with Electric City Aquarium (ECA) in Scranton, Discovery Space will raise a baby California round ray (Urobatis halleri) until she is large enough to join the adult stingrays at ECA. Now, the community has the chance to help give her a name!

"Whether you dream of being a marine biologist, managing an aquarium or just love the ocean, seeing unique marine creatures up close is always fascinating," said Michele Crowl, Executive Director of Discovery Space. "The stingray naming contest is a chance for our community to get involved and build excitement for the programs and experiences ahead."

How to

Participate

1. Color the Stingray: Teachers and troop leaders can download a printable coloring sheet featuring the baby stingray: bit.ly/DS-stingray

2. Vote as a Class: After students complete their coloring sheets, classrooms vote on their favorite name.

3. Submit the Class Entry by Friday, Feb. 28:

-- Email Option: A scanned or photographed submission can also be sent to Stingray@DiscoverySpace.org.

Prizes!

The class with the winning name will receive a free mini lesson plan complete with activity materials and instructions to do together in their own classroom. Additionally, each student in the winning class will receive a free pass to visit Discovery Space, the children's science center located in State College, Pa.
