United Way’s literacy program supported by Foundation grant

LOCK HAVEN — While supporting 13 nonprofit member agencies, the Clinton County United Way also provides educational resources to hundreds of children in Clinton County.

Funded primarily by a $7,500 grant from the Clinton County Community Foundation, the United Way conducts a Dolly Parton Imagination Library here, serving an estimated 800 kids in 2025.

The library program is a free resource for children — up to age 5 — and their families who receive a quality and age-appropriate book delivered by mail to their home each month.

“We want to help inspire a lifelong love of reading. This program removes barriers placed with regard to children’s literacy and alleviates the financial burden on families,” said Carleigh Johnson, United Way Executive director, shown in this photo. Since 2020, the United Way has been awarded nearly $30,000 in grant funds by the Foundation and earned grants well prior to that period.

The United Way is preparing for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year: the 12th annual Sports Night and Fine Arts Auction. The honoree of the night is Carl Poff, former LHU professor, athletic director and coach.

The event is set for 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, May 2, on the Sons and Daughters of Italy Patio on North Henderson Street. Tickets are available at www.clintoncountyunitedway.org.
