CLOTHING

The Light of the World Clothing Bank will be open today, May 2, from 2:30 to 5 p.m., and on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 145 W. Linn St., Bellefonte. Free clothes for everyone, along with accessories, bedding and more!

SPAGHETTI SUPPER

Wingate Church is inviting the public to a spaghetti dinner fundraiser to support a team of their congregation and others who are planning to travel down south this summer to provide assistance with projects to help the local folks living there.

About 30 people from three churches will be traveling to Hot Springs, N.C., for a week in July to help the people in that community that were affected by Hurricane Helene.

The spaghetti supper will be held on Friday, May 16, from 5-7 p.m., at the church fellowship hall. The church is located at 111 Runville Road, Bellefonte, just behind the Sheetz store in Wingate. The meal will include spaghetti, meatballs, salad, bread, drinks and homemade desserts. The cost will be $12 per person for those ages five and older. Children younger than five can eat free. Take-out meals will also be available. Call Janette at 814-883-0893 and have her reserve your tickets for this fundraiser.

FIRE COMPANY YARD SALE

Howard Fire Company will have their annual indoor yard sale on May 8 and May 9 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Donations will be accepted on May 5, 6 and 7 from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Please only donate good, working, usable items or clothing. No TV’s, computers or outdated car seats will be accepted. If bringing heavy items, please make sure to have help with you. Most of our yard sale volunteers are retired and can’t unload heavy items. Thanks to everyone who has donated in the past and to those who plan to donate this year helping to make it another success.

Howard’s town-wide yard sales will be held on May 2 and May 3 so what you don’t sell at your yard sale can be donated to the fire company for their yard sale. Please, no wet clothes should be donated to the fire company’s yard sale.

Howard United Methodist Church and the Howard Christian Church will also be having yard sales during the town-wide’s. Be sure to stop by the churches to look for bargains, too!

BARGAINS AND BLESSINGS

Bargains and Blessings Community Closet will be open for the first sale of the season on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, 551 Hunter Run Road, Howard. Enter through the side door off the lower parking lot. This sale is in conjunction with the Howard town-wide yard sales and will be held rain or shine.

Gently used, good quality clothing, shoes, and accessories for the entire family are available. Sizes range from infants through 3X and are priced at $5 per bag full.

Free coffee, water and small snacks will also be available.

Bargains and Blessings Community Closet is an outreach ministry of Faith Chapel UMC that serves Beech Creek, Blanchard, Howard and surrounding areas. All proceeds go back into the community to help families in need or charitable organizations.

SPORTSMEN’S CLUB Meeting

LTSA Liberty Township Sportsmen’s Association will have a membership meeting on May 17 at 9 a.m. in the clubhouse. All members are encouraged to attend.

MOTHER’S

DAY DINNER

Scouting America Troop 353 of Howard is raising funds for their upcoming high adventure canoe trip to Grand Lake, Matagamon, Maine. The scouts will be having a Mother’s Day Dinner on Saturday, May 10, at the Howard United Methodist Church. The meal will include roast beef with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with bacon, cole slaw, apple sauce, a roll and strawberry shortcake for dessert. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 5-12. Those younger than five can eat for free.

The meal is by reservation and you get to choose your meal time from 3-4 p.m., 4:30-5:30 p.m. or 6-7 p.m. Reservations can be made by calling Patti at 814-625-2182. Take-out meals will also be available, but you must call to reserve your take-out meals as well so that enough food is sure to be prepared. Take-out meals can only be picked up between 2-3 p.m. at the church.

JACK’S

HOAGIES

Jack Miller is once again going to be making his famous hoagies in mid May as a fundraiser for the Yarnell Community Center. Jack makes the hoagies a few days and you can call in your pre-orders to him or get walk-ins while supplies last.

Jack is working on getting some good prices for the meats used in the hoagies so he hasn’t quite decided what flavors will be available and what he will have to charge for each type, but I promise I’ll have more information next week.

HOWARD GRANGE & MORE

The Howard Grange #297 will have their Food Tent set up for the town-wide yard sales beside the old Insurance Office (near the post office) today if you get hungry while you’re yard saling in Howard. Breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers, soup and drinks will be for sale.

On May 3, the Howard V.F.W. Post 8269 will be having a Chicken BBQ. Beginning at 11 a.m. until all gone, the meal will be $15 and includes 1/2 chicken, macaroni salad, potato salad, baked beans and a roll with butter. Bruce’s “secret recipe” will be used for spritzing on the seasoning, and that makes for some great tasting chicken.

Tickets are still available for the Howard VFW’s Gun Drawing on May 10. The gun drawing will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be bought at the VFW club.

YARD SALES

Howard Community Yard Sale days will be on May 2 and May 3. Howard yard sales are always the first full weekend (Friday and Saturday) in May.

Flemington’s community wide yard sales are today and tomorrow, too!

Howard Fire Company’s Indoor Yard Sale May 8 and May 9, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on May 10 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kitchen will be open as well.

Milesburg town wide yard sales will be held on May 16-17.

The Milesburg Museum is now accepting your donations of good, clean and working items for the yard sale. Donations can be dropped off at the museum on Saturday’s or by calling 814-404-4021 for other drop off arrangement times.

FIRE NEWS

Undine Fire Company is having a gun/cash drawing on May 3 at Lambert Hall in Bellefonte. Tickets are $10 each.

Centre Hall Fire Company’s annual gun raffle will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 2-7 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Snow Shoe Fire Company will have a gun raffle on Aug. 2 at the Snow Shoe carnival grounds. Tickets are on sale now at $10 each or 3/$20.

Miles Township (Rebersburg) Fire Company will have a gun raffle on Saturday, Sept. 13. Tickets are on sale now for $10 each or 3/$20. There are 30 prizes to be given away on this raffle and one of them is a 2025 Honda Pioneer side by side.

FAIRVIEW

CEMETERY

The Fairview Cemetery has set May 1 as their spring clean-up of the church and cemetery grounds. Anyone having decorations on the gravesites that you’d want to keep should make plans to remove the items before May 1. Pastor Dave Etters and a crew of volunteers from the church will be performing the clean-up.

Pastor Dave Etters will be the speaker for the annual memorial service at Fairview Cemetery that will be held on Sunday, May 18, at 2 p.m. The cemetery is located at the intersection of Fairview Road, Bullit Run Road and Curtin Hollow Road in Boggs Township, rural Howard.

LIONS NEWS

Milesburg Lions Club holds a weekly Bingo every Thursday night at the Milesburg Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6:45 p.m.

Howard Area Lions Bingo will be held on Thurday, May 8, at the Beech Creek Fire Company’s social hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo starts at 6:30 p.m. Bingo will be held on May 22 before taking a break for the summer months. Bingo will resume in September.

Bring a $5 bag of candy (individually wrapped pieces, but no chocolate) for the Lions to throw to parade watchers at the Memorial Day parade in Beech Creek and get $5 off your Bingo tickets at the Bingos held in May.

Howard Area Lions will have their food distribution on Monday, May 5, from noon to 3 p.m., at the former Beech Creek Elementary School. Bring a sturdy box (or boxes) with you as there is always a need for larger boxes for food distributions. Food distribution is for those residents who live in the Centre County areas of Blanchard, Howard, Hunter Run, Lamar, Marsh Creek, Monument, Mount Eagle and Orviston, and those living in the Clinton County area of Beech Creek Borough and Beech Creek Township.

At the food bank distribution on May 19 there will be garden plants and seeds being given away, free of charge. The Lions expect to have tomato, peppers, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and onions available for food bank patrons. Mark your calendar because only on May 19 will this be happening!

UPCOMING EVENTS

College Township, in honor of it’s 150th anniversary, will be celebrating with a Barn Dance at Millbrook Marsh on Saturday, May 17. The public is invited to the free celebration being held from 6-9 p.m.

From 6-7 p.m., enjoy games, food, face painting for the kids and family fun at the historic barn. From 7-9 p.m. there will be a Contra Dance for everyone to participate in. Don’t worry if you’ve never danced before, experienced caller Bruce Young will guide dancers through each set. Contra dancing is like square dancing, but in lines! So, you can come solo or bring a dance partner to enjoy the evening with.

There will be food trucks on site — Doan’s Bones Barbecue and Super Duper Cafe — for you to purchase your favorite foods from.

Wear your best hoedown attire and come out to enjoy the 150th celebration of College Township.

Centre Ballroom Dancing will be held on May 18 from 2-5 p.m. at Lambert Hall in Bellefonte. There will be a special visitor to give a dancing lesson and also a showcase. The public is invited to Lambert Hall for this event. Cost is $10 per person and please bring a snack to share.

Country Jam at the Yearick Center in Howard on Sunday, May 25, from 2-6 p.m. Bring a snack to share and a few dollars for a donation to the fire company. If you have an instrument and would like to play along with those jammin’ bring it along. Or, just sit back and enjoy the tunes. The Back Porch String Band invites those attending to sing along to the many familiar tunes that are played each week. Country Jam offers a free afternoon of fellowship and music.
