LOGANTON — On Thursday, May 22, Jodie Walizer’s homeroom released the American Freshwater Eels and the Rainbow Trout fry they have been raising since October and January respectively.

This is the first year the group raised eels and it was definitely an adventure. They received 10 elvers and they were able to release three into the Susquehanna River.

The students learned a great deal about the eels and are hopeful for a more successful release next year.

Walizer and her students have been participating in the Trout in the Classroom program for a number of years. The students learn how to assemble the tank, place the eggs in a breeder basket, feed and care for the eggs, fingerlings and fry.

The classes have had many successful releases throughout the years, and this year was not any different. The students perform a stream study prior to releasing the fish to ensure the stream is a viable location for the trout.

The students released 31 fry into Kettle Creek located in Renovo. The students are looking forward to raising the trout again next year.
