PennDOT announces weekly work schedule in Clinton County

LOCK HAVEN — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Clinton County the week of July 28. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Clinton County for the coming week is as follows:

Bridge

Maintenance & Cleaning

— Route 2018 (Jacksonville Road) at a bridge spanning Cedar Run approximately two miles southwest of Cedar Springs in Porter Township: Wednesday, July 30, through Friday, Aug. 1. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.

Crack Seal & Hot Pour Mastic

— Interstate 80 westbound between mile markers 192 and 185: Monday, July 28, and Tuesday, July 29. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures while this work is completed.

Crack sealing and hot pour mastic operations prevent water intrusion from seeping through cracks or joints in an asphalt road, which can lead to potholes and pavement breakup. They are proactive, preventive maintenance strategies to prevent water from entering the roadways and accelerating the formation of potholes and other failures.

Pipe Replacing & Cleaning

— Route 120 starting at Gratzmar Avenue in Noyes Township and continuing westbound approximately 5.5 miles. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

— Route 144 starting at Route 120 in Renovo Borough and continuing southbound for approximately 2.5 miles. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

— Route 144 starting at Route 120 in Renovo Borough and continuing northbound approximately 17.5 miles to the Clinton-Potter County line in Leidy Township. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

— Route 2020 (Lusk Run Road) approximately half a mile west of Oak Lane in Allison Township. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

— Route 2022 (Sugar Run Road) between Dry Run Road in Bald Eagle Township and Route 120 in Allison Township. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

Side Dozing

— I-80 eastbound between mile markers 185 and 194. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. PennDOT will implement single-lane closures while this work is completed.

Side dozing removes excess material from beneath guide rail areas, which improves drainage and allows water to sheet flow off the roadway. Side dozing is a crucial highway maintenance operation because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes and creates the potential for icy conditions in the winter months.

Vegetation Management

— I-80 eastbound between mile markers 171 and 194. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.

— Route 144 starting at Route 120 in Renovo Borough and continuing southbound for approximately 2.5 miles. PennDOT shadow vehicles will be in the roadway for this continuously moving operation that drivers may pass via the open lane providing they do so cautiously and in the absence of oncoming traffic in the opposing lane.

— Route 144 starting at Route 120 in Renovo Borough continuing northbound approximately 17.5 miles to the Clinton-Potter County line in Leidy Township. Monday, July 28, through Friday, Aug. 1. PennDOT shadow vehicles will be in the roadway for this continuously moving operation that drivers may pass via the open lane providing they do so cautiously and in the absence of oncoming traffic in the opposing lane.

Mowing, herbicide spraying and selected tree thinning helps maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.
