SOUTH RENOVO — Bucktail Medical Center is employing a new therapeutic ultrasound/electrical stimulation machine thanks to a grant from the Clinton County Community Foundation.

Bucktail, located in rural western Clinton County in the borough of South Renovo and along the scenic West Branch of the Susquehanna River, provides a range of services that includes imaging, emergency department care, laboratory, rehabilitation, acute care, a community clinic and dietary.

Nate Lewis, BMC’s director of rehabilitation, said the new device essentially helps increase circulation and can modulate pain pathways to improve healing.

He and Laura Murnyack, Bucktail’s CEO, said the center is “excited,” “thankful” and “grateful” to have the device, which is used almost daily on nearly half the patients that walk through the center’s doors. The device combines electrical stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound. Ultrasound uses a piezoelectric crystal that vibrates in response to electrical current to produce high-frequency sound waves. These sound waves can penetrate tissue up to 5 centimeters deep, providing a non-invasive method to increase circulation, reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Electrical stimulation works by delivering controlled electrical impulses to nerves and muscles, helping to activate muscle fibers, enhance strength and reduce pain.

Together, these therapies can help improve functional movement, relieve pain and accelerate recovery from joint replacements, stroke and other musculoskeletal conditions.
