PennDOT, safety partners to hold collection event for expired, unsafe car seats Sept. 18
BELLEFONTE — On Thursday, Sept. 18, representatives from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) District 2, the Highway Safety Network (HSN) and the Pennsylvania Traffic Injury Prevention Project (PA TIPP) will hold a “Car Seat Round Up” to collect children’s car seats that are expired, damaged or unsafe so that they may be properly disposed of.
The event is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, at the Centre County PennDOT Maintenance Headquarters, 1000 E. Bishop St., Bellefonte.
The first 10 families to bring in an unsafe car seat will receive a coupon for a free 10-inch cheese pizza, courtesy of Pizza Mia, 106 N. Main St., Bellefonte.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates there are misuses in nearly half (46 percent) of all car seat installations. Their data also shows car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers when correctly installed.
