Ross Library hosts free Nutrition Links classes every Tuesday in November

The Annie Halenbake Ross Library is partnering with Penn State Extension to offer a free Nutrition Links class series every Tuesday in November from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the library’s Gross Room A. These engaging and educational sessions are designed to help families eat well on a budget, develop healthy habits and make the most of their food resources.

The classes are taught by Sarah Grimes, Nutrition Education Advisor with Penn State Extension. “My lessons involve things such as food safety, meal planning and comparison shopping,” Grimes explained. “I have some flexibility to focus on the class’s specific needs and interests and every lesson includes a taste of a recipe that participants can try at home!”

Each week covers practical and useful topics, including delicious, budget-friendly recipes, smart grocery shopping and saving tips, meal planning and preparation, food safety, and nutrition and healthy habits. Participants who complete the full series will earn a certificate of completion and receive free kitchen tools to help them continue practicing healthy habits at home.

“These classes couldn’t come at a better time,” said the Adult Services Coordinator, Julie Ross, “With the ongoing shutdown and the loss of SNAP and WIC benefits, many families are feeling the strain. This program offers free, hands-on guidance for stretching grocery budgets and getting kids the nutritious meals they need.”

To qualify for the Nutrition Links program, participants must meet income guidelines and regularly care for children, including parents, guardians and grandparents who help care for kids, even part-time. Eligible participants may include:

— Parents or caregivers of children who receive free or reduced school lunch or WIC

— Adults who qualify for SNAP, food pantry boxes or bags or Pennsylvania farmers market vouchers

All classes are free, and no registration is required. Participants are welcome to drop in on any Tuesday morning in November.

The Nutrition Links series supports the PA Forward® Health Literacy Initiative, which helps Pennsylvanians access reliable information and develop skills to make informed decisions about their health and wellness.
