LOCK HAVEN — The local chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) recently honored their own military heroes during a “Veteran’s Day” at their November monthly meeting. During the meeting a guest and chapter members shared their stories of veterans familiar to them.
Guest Karyl Garner honored her father, J. Packer, of Blanchard, a US Signalman during WWII.
Garner also honored her husband, Charles W. Garner, for his service as a Sonarman aboard a helicopter chasing Russian subs from 1969-1972.
NSDAR member Jane Myers honored her husband, Samuel R. Myers, who received a Purple Heart and served during the Korean War. His enlistment was to have been for three years, but President Harry Truman extended the length of his enlistment by six months.
Member Mary E. Vairo honored her three brothers, two of whom are now deceased. Ronald S. Warren, provided Air Force Intelligence during the Korean War while John E. Warren, Jr., served six years in the Army Reserves. Lee F. Warren was in Navy Intelligence during the Vietnam War and now lives in Fresno, Calif.
NSDAR member Diane Whitaker remembered her father, Private Harvey Korb, who participated in “D-Day” during WWII.
Club secretary, Mary Margaret Winton, remembered her father-in-law by displaying the flag that had been presented to his family during his funeral service. He was a WWII veteran.
Members concluded the program by writing cheer cards that will be sent to military veterans.
The local chapter members extend an invitation for others to become members of the NSDAR. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m. at the Ross Library in Lock Haven. The next scheduled meeting will be on Dec. 16 and will include a presentation by Joby Topper, director of the CU-Lock Haven Libraries and assistant director for the CU Library System. Topper’s program, “Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott,” will be in the Gross Community Room on the third floor of the library.
