Old Photo Album: Air Mail hangar at Bellefonte
EXPRESS FILE PHOTO
EXPRESS FILE PHOTO
When the first air mail route was established between New York and Cleveland, planes stopped at Bellefonte for refueling. The hangar to service the planes, pictured, was at the airport at the east end of town, and stood near the location of the Department of Highways maintenance building as of 1971. The airfield was abandoned when planes grew larger and more powerful and were able to make the flight without refueling. This picture was owned and provided by Grace Gamble, of Antes Fort, as of 1971. No date was provided for the picture in the original cutline.
