Central Mountain High School Launches Comprehensive Career Pathways for 2026–27 School Year

MILL HALL — School leaders in the Keystone Central School District have announced the implementation of KCSD Career Pathways beginning in the 2026-27 school year, a forward-thinking initiative designed to help students discover their interests, prepare for future careers and plan for continued education after graduation.

Administrators at Central Mountain High School say the program represents a major step toward making learning more meaningful, engaging and personalized for every student. KCSD Pathways emphasizes career awareness, exploration and preparation at each grade level while providing strong counseling support and the flexibility for students to refine their goals as they grow.

Under the new model, students are introduced by the middle of eighth grade to five broad career readiness clusters that form the foundation of KCSD Career Pathways:

— Business, Management and Information Technology

— Education, Public Safety and Law

— Fine Arts and Communication Media

— Health, Medical and Human Services

— Industry and Engineering Technology

During ninth grade, students continue exploring these areas and begin identifying a pathway aligned with their interests. By tenth grade, students formally select a pathway and work closely with school counselors to develop a personalized course plan that guides their remaining years of high school.

District leaders emphasize that the approach is intentionally flexible. If a student’s interests change, course plans can be adjusted without losing progress and ensuring that each learner’s evolving goals remain at the center of their educational experience.

KCSD Career Pathways are designed to build strong academic knowledge alongside practical, career-focused skills. Within each pathway, students may pursue electives connected to their chosen field, participate in hands-on learning and prepare for a wide range of postsecondary options.

For students planning to attend a four-year college or university, pathway coursework provides a solid academic and technical foundation for majors such as engineering, health sciences and other specialized professions. Colleges increasingly value skill-based and technical experiences that demonstrate initiative, real-world knowledge and readiness for advanced study.

“Career Pathways give our students purpose and direction while keeping doors open for the future,” said Nick Verrelli, Principal of Central Mountain High School. “Whether students choose to enter the workforce, pursue technical training, enter into the military or attend college, this approach ensures they graduate equipped with the skills and confidence needed for success beyond high school.”

By combining rigorous academics with meaningful career preparation, district leaders say the initiative allows students to graduate feeling confident, capable and prepared; whether they enter the workforce directly or continue their education.

To help students and families make informed decisions, the district’s Course Description Guide will include dedicated KCSD Pathways charts identifying which electives align with each career cluster. Counselors will continue working closely with students throughout high school to ensure course selections support long-term goals.

Ultimately, administrators say the purpose of KCSD Career Pathways is simple but powerful, to meet each student’s unique needs while preparing them to become successful, confident adults ready for the opportunities ahead.

Additional information about pathway options, course planning and student enrollment will be shared with families in the coming months as the district prepares for full implementation in the 2026-27 school year.
