Downtown LH Rotary offers scholarships; donations encouraged from the community
LOCK HAVEN — The Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven will give three scholarships in May to Central Mountain High School graduating seniors. Two of the awards are $2,000 each, and one is $1,500.
Graduating young men and young women headed for higher education are encouraged to apply.
Each scholarship is named in memory of a Rotarian who was active in the community. Members of the public are invited to make a donation to honor the legacies of one or more of these remarkable women.
ELEANOR KODISH SCHOLARSHIP
This award remembers Eleanor E. J. Kodish who was always known for her unflagging encouragement. A former principal of Avis Elementary School, she received the Outstanding Educator Award from her alma mater, Commonwealth University — Mansfield. She volunteered with many local organizations including Covenant Cafe and the Friends of the Ross Library, and was still active in the community at age 95. Downtown Rotary elected her Rotarian of the Year and gave her the club’s Service Above Self Award.
This $2,000 award will be given to a graduating senior who intends to pursue a career in education and will attend CU — Mansfield. If no senior qualifies, CU — Lock Haven will be substituted for Mansfield. If no senior qualifies after that, Penn State University will be substituted.
BETTY SCHANTZ SCHOLARSHIP
This $2,000 award is for an active member of Interact, the Rotary organization for high school students.
The Dr. Betty Baird Schantz Memorial Scholarship remembers an award-winning educator. She retired from Temple University where she had been a professor and held other positions including director of student teaching and assistant dean. She later retired from CU — Lock Haven as associate dean. As the owner and operator of Partnership House Bed and Breakfast, she tirelessly promoted our area. She was a member of Downtown Lock Haven Rotary and was a member and officer in numerous other local organizations including the DAR and the Clinton County Women’s Center. The Friends of the Ross Library named her a Friend of the Year. She remained active in the community into her 90s.
ROBERTA WAY SCHOLARSHIP
The Roberta M. Way Memorial Scholarship is a $1,500 award for a graduating senior who demonstrates academics, commitment, and community service and who is pursuing a career in education.
The award is named for a late member of the former breakfast club, the Rotary Club of Mill Hall Sunrise. Bobbie was very active in other community organizations as well, including Millbrook Playhouse, AAUW, Clinton County Historical Society, and the former KCnet. A retired teacher of accounting and other business subjects, she is also remembered as the wife of the late John H. Way, geology professor at CU — Lock Haven.
The family is fully funding the scholarship this year.
