Civil War Round Table set for May 5 in State College
STATE COLLEGE — The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet on Tuesday evening, May 5, in the Activities Room of the South Hills School of Business & Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College, beginning at 7 p.m.
The featured speaker will be Terry Beltz on “Unclaimed Valor: The History of the 130th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers.” On July 4, 1862, Pennsylvania Governor Andrew G. Curtin issued a proclamation that “additional men are required to serve for the suppression of the rebellion.” Many historians have written that “manliness, duty and honor” were factors prompting enlistment. In writing his book on this subject, Mr. Beltz was given access to a collection of letters that the 130th PA Regiment’s Colonel Henry J. Zinn wrote to his wife during his military service prior to his being killed at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Dec. 13, 1862.
Beltz’s book was featured in the November/December 2025 issue of PA Magazine Book Reviews recommended for people to read.
Terry Beltz is a retired Army Colonel with an ardent interest in 19th Century American History, particularly the Civil War. Mr. Beltz completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Bowling Green State University in 1972 and his Master of Arts (History) at the University of Richmond in 2004. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and now lives in Earlysville, Va.
Events in the United States were turbulent, uncertain, nationalistic and full of terror 165 years ago.
Anyone who is interested in joining the Central PA Civil War Round Table is invited to attend.
