Wayne Township to host America250 weekend celebration; events planned May 29 to May 31
McELHATTAN — Wayne Township will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary next weekend with a series of events planned from Friday through Sunday.
Organized by the Wayne Township Recreation Board, the township’s America250PA Weekend is part of the nationwide celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The semiquincentennial celebration will begin Friday, May 29, at 4 p.m. with an opening ceremony at the Wayne Township Nature Park, 191 Linnippi Trail, Lock Haven. The event will feature refreshments, a presentation of flags by the Jersey Shore Honor Guard, a performance of the national anthem, a Walk of Remembrance and a special guest speaker. Organizers also noted that the nonprofit organization A Soldier’s Hands will be at Holiday House with notecard and letter-writing activities, coloring pages and a collection for military personnel.
Events will continue Saturday morning, beginning with a 5K walk/run at 8:30 a.m. Participants will receive America250PA medallions while supplies last.
Registration is available online at runsignup.com/Race/PA/LockHaven/WayneTwpClintonCountyPA5k10kWalkRun. Late registration will also be available before the race at the Bald Eagle Valley Trail Katie’s Crossing in Castanea.
Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, the Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Company, 317 Linnwood Drive, McElhattan, will host a take-out chicken barbecue until 2 p.m. or while supplies last. Meals will cost $12 and include a chicken quarter, baked beans and macaroni and cheese.
At 11 a.m., assisted viewing from Bridge Top via golf cart will be available at Bald Eagle Valley Trail Katie’s Crossing, 261 Spook Hollow Road, Lock Haven, for those needing assistance accessing the bridge overlook. Organizers encourage attendees to bring binoculars and cameras. Members of the Wayne Township Recreation Board will be on hand to assist visitors.
The weekend festivities will conclude Sunday, May 31, with an outdoor worship service at 10 a.m. at Pathway to Christ Church in McElhattan, followed by an ice cream social. Commemorative 3D America250 anniversary ornaments will also be available for purchase at the event for $7 each or two for $12.
