Long Run bridge replacement starts June 8; work to be complete by Thanksgiving

LAMAR — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the contractor for a bridge replacement project will close Route 477 at a bridge spanning Long Run in Lamar Township, on Monday, June 8.

Replacing this bridge, which was built in 1937 and carries an average of nearly 2,500 vehicles daily, will improve the ride quality across the structure, remove a 30-ton weight restriction for single vehicles, a 40-ton weight restriction for combination vehicles and improve its overall condition rating.

While the contractor performs the work, the bridge will be closed and drivers will follow a detour using Auction Road and Route 220, around the closure.

PennDOT anticipates the new bridge opening to traffic and the detour being lifted by Thanksgiving, but all construction schedules are subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

Overall work on this contract includes the removal of the existing bridge, construction of its replacement, full-depth reconstruction of the approaches, guide rail upgrades and miscellaneous construction. H&P Construction, Inc., of Kulpmont, Pa., is the contractor on this $1.4 million project.
