SLATE RUN — More than 200 runners gathered along the scenic Pine Creek Rail Trail on Saturday, June 6 before heading into the rugged backcountry of the Tiadaghton State Forest for the annual Slate Run Half Marathon and 25K.
A total of 210 runners crossed the finish line between the two events, enjoying sunny skies, comfortable temperatures and some of Pennsylvania’s most picturesque trail running terrain, PA Trail Dogs, the race organizers, said.
“The course showcased the remote beauty of the Pine Creek region, winding through well-maintained trails lined with lush forests, cascading creeks, waterfalls and sweeping mountain vistas,” they added.
In the 25K race, Reagan McCoy claimed top male honors, while Whitney Heydenreich led the women’s field.
The half marathon featured a strong field of competitors, with Michael Busada and Eileen Gibbons posting the top two overall finishing performances of the day.

Participants praised both the exceptional trail conditions and the welcoming atmosphere that has become a hallmark of PA Trail Dogs events, the organizers said. From first-time trail runners to seasoned ultramarathon veterans, athletes spent the day sharing miles, encouraging one another and taking in the scenery that makes Pine Creek a favorite destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The finish-line celebration was equally memorable. Spectators gathered throughout the afternoon to cheer on family and friends while enjoying barbecue and the Manor Hotel’s famous soft pretzels. Many runners and their families capped off the day with a refreshing swim in Pine Creek after logging challenging miles on the trails.
The race was organized by Craig Fleming and the PA Trail Dogs.
“It was a fantastic day,” said Fleming. “I’m incredibly thankful for all the volunteers who helped clear trails, staff aid stations and make this another successful event. This was the first year the Slate Run race sold out, and we’re already planning for next year and looking for ways to make the experience even better.”
The Slate Run Half Marathon and 25K mark the beginning of a busy summer racing season for the PA Trail Dogs. Next on the calendar are the Sproul 10K, widely regarded as one of Pennsylvania’s toughest trail races, and the new Sproul 5K, a beginner-friendly option designed to introduce more runners to trail racing. The following day, the trail running community will gather for Little Loggers, a free trail race for children.
