WILLIAMSPORT — UPMC Williamsport recently celebrated the completion of its newly renovated and relocated Interventional Radiology (IR) lab with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“This investment reflects UPMC’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to advanced, high-quality care across north central Pennsylvania,” said Luke Klingler, director, Heart and Vascular Institute, UPMC in North Central Pa. “The new interventional radiology suite strengthens our ability to meet the evolving needs of our communities by enhancing clinical capabilities, supporting multidisciplinary collaboration, and ensuring patients can receive leading-edge, minimally invasive care close to home.”

Interventional radiology is a specialized area of medicine that uses image-guided technology — such as real-time X-ray (fluoroscopy) — to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions without the need for traditional open surgery. These procedures often involve smaller incisions, reduced risk, shorter recovery times, and quicker returns to daily life for patients.

The upgraded suite includes two state-of-the-art labs equipped with next-generation imaging systems that allow clinicians to visualize blood vessels and internal structures in real time. This level of precision enables care teams to identify blockages, guide instruments through the body, and perform treatments such as stent placements or balloon angioplasty with greater accuracy and control.

With an investment of more than $8 million, the new IR suite expands capacity for procedures and supports growth across multiple specialties, including vascular care and other minimally invasive treatments.
