3rd Annual Lacy Day Camp set for Sept. 23

CASTANEA -- First responders, law enforcement officers and community volunteers will come together on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, for the third annual Lacy Day Camp, a one-day event designed to give individuals with special needs the opportunity to learn about law enforcement while enjoying a day filled with activities, friendship and fun.
Held at the Castanea Fire Company Picnic Grounds, Lacy Day Camp combines games and hands-on activities with interactive lessons in law enforcement and public safety. The program gives youth and adults with special needs an opportunity to meet and interact with law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency responders and volunteers in a welcoming environment.
"The program is designed for special needs children that aren't physically able to go to our regular Camp Cadet program," said Hunter Shoemaker, the camp's program coordinator.
The Inspiration Behind Lacy Day
At the heart of Lacy Day Camp is the story of Alyssa Lacy, whose determination and perseverance helped inspire the creation of the program.
Born with a rare chromosome deletion, health complications and physical disabilities, Alyssa faced significant challenges from an early age. Doctors were uncertain what her future would hold, but Alyssa continued to push beyond expectations.
Through countless medical appointments, therapies and surgeries -- along with the unwavering support of her family -- Alyssa learned to communicate through sign language, overcame physical challenges and developed the confidence to pursue the things she loves.
Today, Alyssa enjoys fishing, hunting, camping, gardening, baking, caring for animals and exploring the outdoors. She also takes pride in helping keep her community beautiful by caring for the mountain road she travels each day.
One of Alyssa's passions is Soap Box Derby racing, where she competes alongside her peers and demonstrates that determination can overcome obstacles. She has also challenged herself through rock climbing, music, sports and school activities.
Her courage, kindness and perseverance have inspired those around her. Alyssa's desire to experience summer camp helped inspire Lacy Day Camp, creating an opportunity for other individuals with special needs to enjoy their own camp experience while building friendships, confidence and lifelong memories.
Now entering its third year, Lacy Day Camp continues that mission by bringing the community and first responders together for a day centered around inclusion, encouragement and opportunity.
Alyssa's story serves as a reminder that success is not measured by the challenges a person faces, but by the strength, determination and heart shown while overcoming them.
