FLEMINGTON -- Goodwill Hose Co. Station 7 will host "Under the Helmet," a community conversation focused on mental health and suicide prevention among firefighters, first responders, their families and the community.

The event will feature Scott Willits as the guest speaker. Willits is a first responder, advocate and survivor who will share his experiences while helping bring attention to the mental health struggles that can often remain hidden behind the uniform.

"Under the Helmet" aims to encourage open conversations about mental health, break the stigma surrounding asking for help and remind first responders and their families that they do not have to face difficult times alone.

While the event places a special focus on the first responder community, everyone is welcome to attend. Organizers hope the conversation will also help community members better understand how they can support the firefighters and emergency personnel who serve them.

The event will be held Friday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m., at the Red Eye Center, 516 1/2 Canal St., Flemington.

Light refreshments will be provided, with a social hour following the presentation.

The message behind the evening is simple: be there, listen, support and look out for one another -- both on and off the scene.
