STATE COLLEGE -- The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for the annual joint meeting of the Central PA CWRT and the PSU George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center.
The joint meeting will take place in the Activities Room of the South Hills School of Business & Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College, beginning at 7 p.m.
The featured speakers are Timothy J. Williams, associate professor, Department of History, University of Oregon, and Mark and Ann Persun, visiting scholars, Richards Civil War Era Center, Penn State.
They will speak on "Assembling the South's Lost Cause in Union Prisons."
Stories about prisoners of war fascinated and horrified American readers since the first capture of political prisoners in the Spring of 1861. For decades, historians have written both popular and scholarly accounts of both Union and Confederate prisoners of war focusing on everything from prison conditions, surveillance, health, death and survival. This talk sheds light on a less explored aspect of wartime imprisonment of Confederates in Union prisons: the individual and collective work to assemble first drafts of Lost Cause history with personal memories of imprisonment, shared grievance and camaraderie, at the center.
Events in the United States 160 years ago were turbulent, uncertain, nationalistic and full of terror. All members and anyone interested in joining the Central PA Civil War Round Table are encouraged to attend.
