HOWARD -- Don't miss these two final opportunities to visit Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village before cold weather settles into the Bald Eagle Valley. On Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m., visitors are invited to journey into Pennsylvania's ironmaking past during the season's final guided tour of Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village, 251 Curtin Village Road, Howard.
The tour begins with an orientation video and continues with a "show-and-tell" explanation of the ironmaking process, an introduction to Eagle Iron Works founder Roland Curtin and interior tours of the Curtin Mansion and the Eagle Furnace complex.
Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather. The tour will be held rain or shine. Admission is by donation.
Mark your calendars, too, for the annual Apple Fest on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers will press 35 bushels of apples into fresh cider, available for purchase along with homemade bread and apple butter, apple-cider doughnuts, grilled chicken and more.
Vendors, musicians and demonstrators will fill the lawn with activities and old-fashioned fall fun for families of all ages. Festival visitors may also tour the historic C&O caboose and welcome passengers arriving aboard the Apple Harvest Special, sponsored by the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society. Admission is $5 for visitors ages 11 and older
