HOWARD -- Celebrate fall at the Eagle Iron Works and Curtin Village Apple Fest on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 251 Curtin Road, Howard.
Admission is $5 per person for those 11 and older while children age 10 and under are free. Free parking is available. Dress for the weather -- nearly all activities are outside, rain or shine.
Enjoy fresh-pressed cider, apple butter, apple-cider donuts, caramel apples, barbecue chicken and corn on the cob, hard cider for guests age 21 and older, local vendors, crafts and live music by the Mountain City Trio and Celtic Nations Duo. Free tours of the Curtin Mansion, historic iron furnace and the C&O Caboose will be offered throughout the day.
Families can enjoy old-time children's games, straw-bale climbing, pumpkin decorating, wooden-apple painting, corn shelling, candle dipping, Victorian dress-up and farm animals -- including an emu named Eleanor and goats. The day will also feature cider pressing, horseradish making, tintypes, timber framing, Victorian dress demonstrations, Civil War history and the story of local artist Annie Snyder.
If you're a railfan, plan to arrive by 11:15 a.m. to welcome the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society's sold-out excursion train.
Bring your camera and take lots of photos with the Curtin excursion wagon and the mansion as your backdrop or alongside Keystone Lincoln--or simply come and enjoy a fall day.
