This Friday is Halloween and whether you're planning a full-blown party or just want to make the evening special for a few favorite ghouls and ghosts you've got to create a few creepy treats -- just for the fun of it.
After an evening of walking the streets, the zombies are sure to be dying of thirst. Treat them to a glass of Wormy Punch, a frothy mix of pineapple juice, lemon-lime soda and orange sherbet. Gummy worms slithering over the sides of the punch bowl add creepiness.
Kids love hot dogs so a batch of Mummy Dogs (wieners wrapped in cheese and crescent dough strips with a bit of ketchup to simulate blood) are a great choice for fright night munching.
For an easy dessert, bake a chocolate cake from a box, cut into cubes and layer in a bowl with instant chocolate pudding mixed with whipped topping. Crumble some of the cake and layer on top to resemble "dirt," hence the name Dirt Cake Trifle. Garnish with an assortment of gummy bugs and worms to bring the scare factor.
Wormy Punch
1 gallon orange sherbet, softened
1 quart pineapple juice, chilled
1 liter lemon-lime soda, chilled
Gummy worms
Directions: In punch bowl combine sherbet and pineapple juice; stir well. Add soda and stir till sherbet is almost dissolved. Decorate bowl with gummy worms coming over the side. Serve immediately. Makes 20 (1-cup) servings.
Mummy Dogs
1 can refrigerated crescent dinner rolls
2 1/2 slices American cheese, quartered
10 large hot dogs
Cooking spray
Mustard or ketchup
Directions: Unroll dough and separate at perforations, creating four rectangles. Press perforations to seal. With knife or pizza cutter, cut each rectangle lengthwise into 10 pieces, making a total of 40 pieces of dough. Slice cheese slices into quarters (1/2 slice cheese, cut in half).
Wrap 1/4 slice of cheese and 4 pieces of dough around each hot dog to look like bandages, stretching dough slightly to completely cover hot dog. About 1/2-inch from one end of each hot dog, separate bandages so hot dog shows through (for face.)
Place wrapped hot dogs (cheese side down) on large ungreased baking sheet. Spray dough lightly with cooking spray. Bake in preheated 375-degree F. oven 13 to 17 minutes or till light golden brown and hot dogs are hot. With mustard or ketchup draw features on face. Serves 10.
Dirt Cake Trifle
1 package chocolate cake mix
1 (5.9-ounce) package chocolate instant pudding
3 cups cold milk
1 container whipped topping, thawed
Gummy insects or worms, for garnish
Directions: Prepare and bake cake in greased 13×9-inch pan according to package directions. Cool completely.
Whisk together pudding mix and milk in large bowl for 2 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes. Stir in whipped topping.
Cut 3/4 of the cake into 1/2 -inch cubes. Layer half each of the cake cubes and pudding mixture in large clear glass bowl; repeat layers. Crumble remaining cake cubes into crumbs and sprinkle over the dessert. Top with gummy creatures. Refrigerate 15 minutes. Serves 16.
