We had a wonderful time recognizing the donors who funded the cleaning, repairing and stabilizing of Annie Snyder's 1903 painting "Reading the Tea Leaves." Donors included Bob Kane, Bobbie Maguire, Janine Bruno, Jo Ann Bowes, Lisa Byerly, Jim Lovette, Doug Byerly, Jim Berkebile, Lenny and Maribeth Long, Carl Watkins, Sue and Paul Welch, Jim and Carol Hanna, Erik Evans, Cori Myers, Joyce Adgate, Pete and Taffy Lopes, Dan and Rose Reeder and Kay Land.

It was nice to see our members in attendance for a few hours of food, drink and conversation. We introduced our next Annie Snyder painting, "Strawberries," to be cleaned in 2025.

Through the generosity of Steve Poorman, we have updated Clinton County afghans for sale for $45, plus tax. They will be available at all our programs and at the Heisey Holiday Open House on Dec. 8.

From the Collection

I usually don't write these paragraphs in the first person but I'm making an exception this month. We at the Historical Society sometimes receive requests for information about some aspect of our Clinton County history. In April, we received a request for the names of shoe repairmen who did business in Lock Haven during the 1930s. As long as the request does not involve genealogical information (those requests go directly to our resident expert, Joyce Adgate), I try to find an answer. Using the phone books in our collection as well as those at the Ross Library, I was able to send the requestor a list of names that included some familiar names such as Delgrippo and Torsell.

One of the unfamiliar names, Michael Salvia, grabbed my attention immediately when I read the address of his business. It was in my side yard on East Main Street. I then remembered that there had been a small, one story building in the front half of our yard when I was growing up. I think it was torn down after the 1964 flood. My research into Michael Salvia continued. He was last listed in the 1936 phone book but his wife, Rose, was listed in the 1939 phone book as a widow who was living in the rear of my house which would have been my kitchen. More research was needed.

Michael Salvia came to the US from Italy with his parents as did Rose Russo. They married in New York City and later moved to Lock Haven where he was a shoe repairman for 25 years. Michael and Rose had one daughter, Lucy (Lucia), who was born in 1898. In August 1917, Leo C. Caprio married Lucy Salvia and in the early 1920s they moved into what is now my house. In the early 1930s, Michael and Rose moved from 18 N. Washington St. to the home of their daughter and son-in-law on East Main Street. Michael died at the age of 68 on May 19, 1936. Rose continued to live with Lucy and Leo C. until her death in 1956. In the late 1940s, Leo Caprio sold his home to my parents and they sold it to me in the 1990s.

All this definitely fits into the category of "what I found while looking for something else." I can't wait to find what I will discover in our collection in 2025.

The Heisey will close to visitors on Dec. 13 and reopen on Jan. 20 in time for our annual membership meeting/lunch. You will still be able to reach us via email and phone.
