UNIVERSITY PARK -- Penn State Extension educators are encouraging people to leave the lazy, hazy days of summer behind by attending an upcoming training program designed to help adults improve their health and strength through an exercise program.

The Lifelong Improvements through Fitness Together, or LIFT, class is held twice weekly in one-hour sessions, offered as an eight-week or 12-week in-person workshop at various locations through mid-December.

This class is designed for men and women 40 years of age and older who are interested in improving their health, vitality and well-being.

The program encourages participants to work toward personal goals in a supportive group environment and may lead to improvements in functional fitness and the ability to perform daily activities with ease.

In addition to physical activity, the program offers basic nutrition information with a focus on increasing fruit and vegetable intake.

The program consists of:

-- A five-minute warm-up.

-- Eight to 12 strength-training exercises to promote proper body positioning, flexibility and posture.

-- Easy-to-use nutrition information for improved health.

-- A five-minute cool-down.

Registration dates vary by location and option. For the eight-week options, the course fee is $60; the 12-week option has a course fee of $90. Organizers noted that some insurance policies may reimburse participants with 80% or better attendance. Individuals can contact their insurance provider to determine eligibility for coverage.

More information and registration for the eight-week and 12-week class is available on the Penn State Extension website.
