DANVILLE — The Pennsylvania Medical Society’s Everyday Hero Award was presented to Dr. Michael Marvin, department chair of transplant surgery, Geisinger Medical Center, at an April ceremony.

Marvin was nominated by liver transplant recipient Jaclyn Smith, of Goldsboro. The award highlights Geisinger’s pledge to offer patients the highest quality health care.

“Dr. Marvin literally held my life in his hands and decided to take a chance on me. I was in extremely critical condition and whether I’d make it through the surgery was not likely, but Dr. Marvin saw me as more than just a patient,” said Smith.

Marvin said serving as a transplant surgeon is rewarding, and a team effort.

“This award is really about my team — the donors, anesthesiologists and social workers who all have a hand in this process,” he said. “This is really an honor for them as well.”

Marvin earned his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York and completed his residency in general surgery and a fellowship in transplant and hepatobiliary surgery, both at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, also in New York.

Marvin joined Geisinger in 2016 as the department chair of transplant surgery.

The society’s Everyday Hero Award, launched in 2018, is designed to showcase talented physicians who go above and beyond in their profession and in providing patient care.
