WILLIAMSPORT -- AIDS Resource recently commemorated 35 years of dedicated service to the community.
Since its inception in 1988, the organization has grown from a small grassroots effort to a pillar of support for individuals living with HIV and the LGBTQ+ community.
The journey began in Lycoming County, where the organization's mission was to provide comfort and dignity to those dying of AIDS-related illnesses.
As medical advancements transformed the HIV landscape, so did their mission. In 2003, the expansion into Snyder and Union counties initiated a decade of growth, ultimately expanding to Clinton, Centre and Potter counties. During this time, outreach efforts surged, focusing on prevention, education, testing and community engagement.
Services also flourished, evolving from medical case management to transportation assistance, medical adherence counseling and the convenience of a mail-order pharmacy. Budget counseling, financial aid programs and housing support were introduced, addressing the broader challenges faced by clients.
In 2018, the organization expanded its reach to Elk, Cameron, Clearfield and McKean counties, while launching a groundbreaking free PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) program at its Williamsport office to make HIV prevention more accessible.
An incident in 2022 served as a catalyst for the establishment of a free clothing boutique catering to the LGBTQ+ community. Their steadfast dedication to innovation remained unwavering as they introduced two pivotal initiatives: the Early Intervention Services and Advanced Care programs. They also added the Organic Produce Delivery Program to round out their health and well-being initiative. Furthermore, a dedicated program has been instituted to extend financial support to survivors of sexual assault, ensuring they have access to HIV PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis).
This year saw the inauguration of AR Health, a healthcare clinic providing comprehensive, judgment-free primary care services for individuals living with HIV and the LGBTQ+ community.

They inspire those around them to become more active within our communities and to reflect those qualities to the best of our ability. Their journey has been defined by adaptability and community support. The organization had the honor of hosting distinguished guests like Larry Kramer, Timothy Brown and Peter Staley.
As they look ahead, the unwavering goal is to evolve and meet the ever-changing needs of clients and patients. They extend heartfelt gratitude to the community, partners and supporters for their integral role in shaping their narrative and contributing to their success.
