LOGANTON — Sugar Valley is like a big 17 mile long oval bowl. Over the years, locals have come up with colloquial names for the border roads — to the north is the “summer side,” and to the south the “winter side,” each named for how the sun hits the base of the mountains.
Both have their virtues, and as their names suggest, the summer side has more sunlight. The winter side tends to be a little cooler, and during this time of year, kind of dreary.
Travelers on East Winter Road, look at the landscape as they move through the valley and become used to seeing the fields, trees and the occasional house, go by. So when they come upon the colorful array of outdoor yard decor that Mountainside Lawn Furniture has on display in front of their shop, it brightens their day, and puts a little bit of sunshine on the winter side.
The shop is located at 972 East Winter Road, four miles south-east of Loganton, and specializes in poly furniture so beautiful it could be used at a formal garden party, but yet so durable it can be set up near your kid’s play area, and survive mudpies and baseball strikes.
Mountainside Lawn Furniture first opened up shop 31 years ago when Amos Stoltzfus went into business providing the area with quality outdoor furniture, like swings, windmills and birdhouses. Nowadays, Amos helps with the furniture, but has passed the saw onto his son Sam who bought the business about 20 years ago.
“It is surely a family business,” said Sam, with a smile. “My Dad still helps here, and my oldest son works here, too.”
They carry a large inventory and stand behind their “Beautiful Backyard Collection” that will fit any taste from classic homestyle to sleek contemporary, and make your outdoors “something special.”
Sam has a nice selection of furniture that can be purchased on the spot, but most of their sales come from custom orders. “Many of our customers like to come to the shop to order their pieces because they can look over the colors we have available, and personally pick what they like.”
Everything they sell comes in a variety of colors and woodgrains. Porch gliders, folding Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, bird feeders, outdoor serving bars, porch rockers and flower planters, are only a few of their offerings.
As a bonus, buyers of Mountainside Lawn Furniture will be happy to know that their purchase is an environmentally sound one.
“Something I feel is important to mention is the way the product is made,” said Sam. “It’s made out of recycled milk jugs, so it helps the environment a little bit.”
