Staying the course: Making improvements at Walnut St. Christian School

2 min read

AVIS -- Last spring, WSCS hosted a trail run on a newly-blazed path adjacent to our soccer complex. While there was an amazing turnout and great success, we did receive a few complaints about runners tripping over the roots and stumps of the recently cut saplings and shrubs along the trail. From the feedback we received, we had some choices to make: Do we never use the new trail again? Do we ignore the complaints and do things exactly the same way? Do we learn from the successes and failures and make the next trail run even better? Obviously, the best decision is the last one. And, the reality is, that last approach is applicable in a lot of different areas of a school.

Another "trail" WSCS established years ago is our Student Scholarship Fund. This year alone we have given out close to $40,000 in scholarship money to our families. However, we have begun implementing a program that can greatly improve our ability to get funds to families in financial need. Through EITC, businesses and individuals are able to give at a higher rate and in a more effective way to aid families in their tuition payments! We have been adamant that we never turn down a student due to financial needs, and EITC is helping us accomplish that commitment.

WSCS is also committed to play: and we're talking the sweaty, grass-stained, staticky slide kind of play. While we do have a playground and plenty of room for kids to run outside, our playground is lacking in equipment for the number of students we have. This past summer, we finished our first phase of improvement, installing two new basketball hoops. This spring, we're looking to continue raising funds to complete our second phase, installing two new large playground structures for our students to enjoy.

While trail runs, scholarships and playgrounds are nothing new, we are staying the course, pushing ahead, and making improvements to benefit our community, our families and our students. And for us, that's progress!
