Seeking volunteers

The American Red Cross seeks volunteers to help with the installation of smoke detectors and the education of residents on the importance of fire preparedness in the neighborhood around St. Joseph’s Catholic Church this Saturday in Bellefonte. Chicken barbecue

Lock Haven First Church of Christ, Vesper and East Water streets, will hold its third annual chicken barbecue Saturday, Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The take-out dinner includes half of a famous Dunnstown Fire Co. barbecued chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, dessert and roll. What is better than a good old church barbecue with all the fixins?

Apple fest & cars

The annual Apple Harvest Fest and Car Show will be held on Market Street in Milesburg, Sept. 26. From 8:30 to 10 a.m. Breakfast will be served outdoors. Apple dumplings, homemade soups, baked goods and a luncheon stand will be on site. Vehicle registrations will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. There will be entertainment all day, and the Milesburg Museum will be open to the public.

Crafters needed

The Flemington Hi-Neighbor Committee will hold the fall festival on Sept. 12 at Grove Park in Flemington. Crafters are needed. If interested, call 570-748-6694 for more information. The committee is also seeking new members after its reorganization.

Drawing sessions

Yost reunion

The 54th Annual Yost Reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Grove Community Park in Flemington, beginning with a meal at noon. Attendees are asked to bring dishes to share and mark dishes ahead of time. Drinks and table service will be provided. Children’s games and a business meeting will begin after the meal. Afternoon activities include softball, volleyball and horseshoes. The evening meal begins at 5 p.m. Bring hot dogs and buns for your family’s evening meal.

West Branch Soccer Club

The 34th Annual West Branch Soccer Club camp for kids ages 5-14 will be held on August 10th to the 14th, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

This long running camp is for boys and girls entering Kindergarten to 8th grade. It is a great way to get ready for the fall soccer season, be it West Branch , AYSO, or Junior High. We keep a low coach to camper ratio. The emphasis is on FUN while campers learn the fundamentals. The older campers will learn advanced skills and tactics.

Each camper will receive a camp ball and a camp T-shirt at the end of the week. The cost is $75. Prizes will also be given out at the end of the week. Additional siblings may attend with a $15 discount. The camp is held at the spacious West Branch Soccer Club fields across the river from Lock Haven a mile from Veterans’ Bridge. All profits from the camp go to help support West Branch’s effort to promote youth soccer.

Brochures can be picked up at stores in Lock Haven. Brochures may also be downloaded at westbranchsoccer.org.

The new date for the annual Lynne Ramm Memorial Cardboard Boat Race has been announced. The race will be held at the Woodward Township boat launch Saturday, Aug. 1, weather permitting. Boat judging will begin at noon and the race will start at 1 p.m.

Wayne Township Landfill is helping the planet. The landfill can now recycle small items made of No. 1 through No. 7 plastics. The Sugar Valley United Methodist Charge will hold an ice cream social Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Booneville Campground, two miles west of Loganton. Homemade ice cream, pies, cakes and sandwiches will be available. Carl and Opal will entertain with gospel music.

The second Fresh Air bus arrives July 27, and local volunteers are looking for new hosts for this area. Think about hosting a New York City child for one to two weeks this summer. Dealing with an addict in your life? Come and talk with others who are going through it too. Bechdel exhibit

Due to a rise in interest, the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, located at 598 Green St. in Mifflinburg, has decided to extend the exhibit in honor of Lock Haven native Helen Bechdel through July 16. If you haven’t already, plan a trip out to see her clothes and other memorabilia.

Nancy Heilman is organizing trips throughout the wider region, including a shopping trip Oct. 24 to the Lancaster area, a wine country trip Nov. 7 to the Finger Lakes area, and a kid-friendly trip to New York City on Dec. 5. For more information, call her at 748-3649.

Drawing sessions

Monthly, free life-drawing sessions are being held the second Wednesday of each month at The Station Gallery, located at 2 E. Kettle Creek State Park will offer “Wily Whitetails” at 8 p.m. tomorrow. This program will teach about the popular state animal of Pennsylvania, including adaptations, a brief history, and habits, among other things. Meet at the Nature Center. On Saturday, Ole Bull State Park will offer the same program at 8 p.m. Meet at the amphitheater.

Hearing aids

A collection box is still available for donations of hearing aid batteries and used hearing aids to help children in under-developed nations. Used hearing aids – in any condition – may be dropped off at The Express on West Main Street. The Rotary Club of Downtown Lock Haven is sponsoring the collection.
