Bellefonte board acts on personnel matters

BELLEFONTE -- The Bellefonte Area school board addressed several personnel matters at its regular meeting on Tuesday night at the Bellefonte Area Middle School cafeteria.

The board accepted a pair of retirements -- Susan Benson and Debbie Caldwell. Both are para educators in the district. Benson is a para educator at Benner Elementary School and has been with the district since September, 1996. Caldwell was a para educator at Bellefonte Elementary School and has also been with the district since September, 1996. Both retirements are effective on June 30.

It awarded tenure to Kristy Fitzgerald of Bellefonte Elementary for completing three years of satisfactory teaching in the district. It accepted a pair of resignations. First was the resignation of English teacher Kevin Briggs, effective June 13. Briggs has been with the district since August, 2016. Trevor Danko's resignation from assistant junior high football coach was also accepted. Danko's position is considered an extra duty extra pay position.

The board accepted three short-term uncompensated leaves -- teachers Briggs and Jennifer Kroboth as well as para educator Prestie Headings. Kobroth is a teacher at Bellefonte Elementary while Briggs and Headings are at the high school.

In other business, the board approved:

∫ A trip for the girls' soccer team to attend a camp at Shippensburg University from July 25 through July 28. Approximate cost for vans will be around $350. All costs will be paid for by the booster club.

∫ The following booster clubs: Boys' basketball, boys' soccer, girls' soccer, football, gymnastics, baseball, cross country, track and field, lacrosse and wrestling.

∫ The following textbooks for the 2019-20 school year. According to the district, the textbooks were evaluated against rigorous criteria and have met the approval process. All texts were included with the 2019-20 budget. They are: enVision AGA Common Core (Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, enVisionmath 2.0 grade 7, enVisionmath 2.0 grade 8. Total cost is $159,262,86.

∫ A four-year lease with VFG Leasing for computer equipment (HP 440 laptops – $92,295) with a monthly payment amount of $2,178.07.

∫ The 2018 Homestead and Farmstead Exclusion Resolution as presented.

∫ The purchase of 250 Emergency Preparedness Directories to be placed in classrooms for the total amount of $8,052.50.

∫ The superintendent to approve minor change orders up to $5,000 for the current construction project of Rogers Stadium.

∫ A quote adding lighting to the scoreboard as well as the addition of an ADA hearing assistance system.

∫ The purchase of track and field equipment for Rogers Stadium in the amount of approximately $72,000. Funds will be paid for from the athletic budget and/or the athletic fund balance. These items are needed to hold home track and field meets at Rogers Stadium.

∫ The revised job description for the school resource officer.

∫ The collective bargaining agreement between the Bellefonte Area Educational Support Professionals Association and BASD for the period of July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2023.

The board will meet just once next month. It meeting will take place at 7 p.m.
